Five Predictions For ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is just one week away (less than a week for the early Thursday showings), and no one really knows what’s going to happen in the films. Disney has done a great job with the trailers, inserting misdirection while seemingly revealing a lot of footage from The Last Jedi. The latest television spot hints at a certain someone wielding a recognizable lightsaber at the end.

With Episode VIII several days away, here are a few of the most likely scenarios for the film. These aren’t supposed to be huge revelations, as you’ve probably thought of them yourself if you haven’t read about them or talked about them with friends. Read at your own risk in case I happen to be right about some of this, but I’m just speculating.

Rey goes to the dark side

Pretty obvious, right? It’s perhaps the most popular theory out there for The Last Jedi, and that recent television spot makes it seem like that’s what’s going to happen. In fact, most of these trailers and television spots have made it seem as though Rey is headed to the dark side. It could just be total misdirection, but it could also be Disney bracing the kids for their favorite new character to turn bad.

Luke goes to the dark side

The last Jedi has been in exile for about a decade (give or take) after Kylo Ren executed many of his young Jedi students years ago. Luke is a even-tempered master of the Force, but he probably thought a lot about the terrible event over the years. His father was already “the chosen one” and went to the dark side as Darth Vader—though he did ultimately redeem himself in the end—so it’s possible Luke was driven from the light during his lonely stay on Ahch-To.

We see Luke in a lightsaber battle

Currently, Luke is probably considered around 50 or 60 years old, which means he has a disadvantage if he has to fight Kylo (or Rey). However, this is maybe the greatest Jedi to ever live we’re talking about here. It’d be awesome to see him back in action, and it’s probably a good bet to happen.

Ren and Rey team up

A team-up doesn’t need to be a good thing (if you’re rooting for the good guys), as Kylo might be able to convince Rey to join the dark side. On the flip side, Rey might be able to convince Ren, who is obviously conflicted, to join her. Depending on the direction a pairing goes, it’d probably set them up to either both go after Luke or Snoke. Though there’s also Captain Phasma and the Stormtroopers in the mix, it seems the light side is top-heavier. Make of that what you will.

Snoke is Darth Plagueis

This prediction is probably the least likely of the five, but it’s not like I’m predicting Jar Jar Binks is Snoke. Emperor Palpatine subtly told Anakin back in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith that he killed Darth Plageius in his sleep (Anakin didn’t catch on) after he became more powerful than him. Palpatine said Plagueis could “create life,” so could he re-create his own life with that much power? But Palpatine could have just made the whole “creating life” thing up as a part of the plan to bring Anakin to the dark side, so this is probably a reach.
