The team that finished last season 0-16 will be in the spotlight this summer, as HBO announced the Cleveland Browns will be featured on this season of Hard Knocks. The announcement, in part, reads:
HBO Sports, NFL Films and the Cleveland Browns team up for an unfiltered, all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE CLEVELAND BROWNS kicks off its five-episode season this summer. Spotlighting the AFC North franchise that has the hometown region excited as a wave of new, young players and veteran acquisitions get acclimated to the team, the 13th edition of the 16-time Sports Emmy® Award-winning series debuts TUESDAY, AUG. 7 (10:00–11:00 p.m. ET/PT). Other hour-long episodes of the first sports-based reality series — and one of the fastest-turnaround programs on TV — debut subsequent Tuesdays at the same time, with encore plays Wednesday nights, culminating in the Sept. 4 season finale.
“HARD KNOCKS returns with 91 football players determined to fulfill their NFL dreams, yet only 53 will succeed,” says Peter Nelson, executive vice president, HBO Sports. “The standard set by this landmark program is for fans to witness the truth as it unfolds: no staging, no second takes, no varnish. We are grateful to the Browns organization for allowing us to spend the summer with the team in what promises to be an intriguing training camp experience.”
New Browns GM John Dorsey said he was “reluctant” about his team being featured on Hard Knocks, but that the show will “give our fans the opportunity to see how passionate the people in our building are about winning and how excited we are about getting to work and preparing for the 2018 season.”
There are many storylines for Browns training camp. The spotlight is on head coach Hue Jackson, who went 1-31 through two seasons in Cleveland; but Jackson brought in former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley to run the offense. It’ll be interesting to see how much give and take there is between the two offensive minds, or if Haley will truly be given the freedom to run the show offensively.
Also, there is the new veteran talent that’s been added to the Browns roster this offseason: quarterback Tyrod Taylor, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, and running back Carlos Hyde. Former All-Pro wide receiver Josh Gordon will also be someone to watch throughout the season.
And of course, there’s first overall pick and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield. The team has insisted Taylor will be the team’s starter this season, but it’s hard to believe there won’t be competition considering how much the Browns think of their franchise quarterback.
This season of HBO’s hit NFL training camp series should be among the most anticipated, and it should be an intriguing watch.
Hard Knocks premieres Tuesday, August 7 at 10:00 PM ET on HBO.
Can’t wait for this. Inside look at the squad will be nice.
