‘Game of Thrones’ Countdown: Top Ten Warriors

For today’s countdown, we are going over the best warriors in Game of Thrones, and there are certainly a lot of great ones that missed the list. Khal Drogo, Brienne of Tarth, Bronn, and Sandor Clegane (who lost to Brienne) are among the most notable.

We’re just a few days away from the Season 7 premiere on HBO, and here’s the countdown so far:

July 6: Top Ten Characters

July 7: Top Ten Villains

July 8: Top 25 Quotes

July 9: Top 25 Moments

July 10: Top Ten Episodes

July 11: Top Ten Weapons

July 12: Top Ten Posters

10. Gregor Clegane

There might not be a more intimidating figure in Game of Thrones than “The Mountain.” Ser Gregor is now an unnatural being that survived manticore venom from Oberyn Martell, thanks to Qyburn. Cersei is in pretty good shape with The Mountain protecting her.

9. Oberyn Martell

If not for his hubris, Oberyn Martell would have beaten and killed The Mountain in a duel. Perhaps it was his extravagant style, but it didn’t appear the Dornish prince had too much trouble doing it, either. “The Red Viper” simply gave The Mountain an opening to, uh, end him.

8. Ned Stark

It was only talked about in the show, but Lord Eddard Stark was one of the most important people to fight alongside Robert in Robert’s Rebellion. Also, while Jaime wasn’t going to kill him because it would have meant the death of Tyrion, Ned held his own against the great Lannister swordsman.

7. Jorah Mormont

The exiled knight and son of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont has shown his great skill as a warrior. When he’s fighting for Daenerys, there aren’t many better warriors than Jorah Mormont. He defeated a Dothraki (Qotho), and took everyone out in the fighting pits, and threw a spear perfectly to kill the Son of the Harpy trying to assassinate Daenerys.

6. Robb Stark

Ned Stark’s eldest son proved to be one of the greatest warriors in Game of Thrones. With the help of his direwolf, Grey Wind, Robb never lost a battle during the War of the Five Kings. “The Young Wolf” even won a battle against—and then captured—Jaime Lannister. No doubt a great warrior, Robb’s life came to an end when he was figuratively stabbed in the back, and literally stabbed in the heart.

5. Robert Baratheon

In Game of Thrones, King Robert Baratheon certainly didn’t look the part of a great warrior—but he was. He was able to grab the Iron Throne because of his great ability as a warrior, including when he killed Rhaegar Targaryen at the Battle of the Trident. In a potential spin-off is when we’ll see Robert’s real might.

4. Jaime Lannister

Of course, like with Robert and his state during Game of Thrones, this doesn’t mean Jaime in his current state (without his sword hand). At the peak of his powers, Jaime was one of the most skilled swordsman in Westeros.

3. Barristan Selmy

A long-time member of the Kingsguard and its former Lord Commander, Ser Barristan was even better than Jaime with a sword. When forced off the Kingsguard by King Joffery and Cersei, Ser Barristan drew his sword and told five members of the Kingsguard, “Even now, I could cut through the five of you like carving a cake!” He was probably right.

2. Arthur Dayne

We only saw Ser Arthur Dayne in the flashback Tower of Joy scene which ultimately led to his death, but there might not have been anyone talked more highly of than him. Ned said Ser Arthur was the best swordsman he ever saw. The ancestral sword of House Dayne, Dawn, also contributes to his greatness as a warrior.

1. Jon Snow

There are some great warriors in Game of Thrones, but there might not be any better than Jon Snow. Jon rallied the wildings to fight against the White Walkers, became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, came back from the dead, won the Battle of the Bastards, became King in the North, and is the only person on this list we saw kill a White Walker. He has the strongest argument as the greatest warrior in Game of Thrones.
