Many of the MLB teams expected to be elite in 2025 are performing early in the year.
1. San Diego Padres (16-6) | Last week: 1
Fernando Tatis Jr. scored all three runs for the Padres in their win over the Astros yesterday. Tatis has a nine-game hitting streak and has reached base in all 21 games for San Diego this season. Thankfully Luis Arraez seems to be OK after a scary collision early in the win.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (16-7) | Last week: 6 (+4)
The Dodgers did what you’d expect to the Rockies before taking two of three from the Rangers. The weekend series included two shutout wins headlined by Yoshinobu Yamamoto going seven innings with 10 strikeouts.
3. New York Mets (15-7) | Last week: 2 (-1)
Last week began with a series loss to the Twins, but the Mets bounced backed in a major way with a four-game sweep of the Cardinals. Next up is an exciting early-season series versus the Phillies.
4. New York Yankees (14-8) | Last week: 7 (+3)
Max Fried went 7.2 scoreless innings, helping the Yankees limit the Rays to just two hits despite only three total strikeouts for the club. We’ll see if yesterday’s homer can get Cody Bellinger going.
5. Philadelphia Phillies (13-9) | Last week: 3 (-2)
Unable to complete a weekend sweep, the Phillies gave up the lead late to the Marlins and lost in extras. Christopher Sanchez has one of the performances of the week with 12 strikeouts with a changeup the Giants couldn’t touch.
6. San Francisco Giants (14-8) | Last week: 5 (-1)
Overall, the Giants more than held their own in a matchup at Citizens Bank Park, scoring 29 runs in the four-game split. The bats slowed down in a series loss to the Angels, though.
7. Chicago Cubs (14-10) | Last week: 4 (-3)
The Cubs drop a few spots this week with other teams rising, but they’re coming off a series victory against the Diamondbacks. This week against the Dodgers and Phillies is a good test.
8. Seattle Mariners (12-10) | Last week: 8
The Mariners stayed hot, increasing their series winning streak to four after taking down the Blue Jays over the weekend. Seattle stays east to face Boston before heading back west.
9. Arizona Diamondbacks (13-9) | Last week: 10 (+1)
In a matchup of two of the top offenses in baseball to this point, Arizona salvaged the weekend series at Chicago with a thrilling extra innings win yesterday
10. Detroit Tigers (13-9) | Last week: 9 (-1)
The Tigers are 8-2 at home this season, and they host the MLB-best Padres for a huge test before finishing the month versus the Orioles and Astros. Detroit’s pitching has remained a weapon in 2025.
