No surprise, the Dodgers are back atop the first 2025 MLB power rankings for May.
1. Los Angeles Dodgers (23-11) | Last week: 3 (+2)
The relatively heavy favorites on FanDuel to win the World Series, the Dodgers are back in the top spot of this week’s power rankings after a hot week for the offense that included seven-plus runs in four of their six games (all wins). And a 2-1 victory on Sunday was headlined by Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings at Atlanta.
2. Detroit Tigers (22-13) | Last week: 1 (-1)
Among the biggest MLB latest news is the play of the Tigers, with many finally taking notice of what’s been the best team in the American League to this point. Detroit has slugged 20 homers over the past seven games, their most in a seven-game stretch since 2004.
3. San Diego Padres (22-11) | Last week: 6 (+3)
Bouncing back from getting swept by the Rays a couple of weekends ago, the Padres took all five games last week including both games against the Giants in the NL West. It was good to see Fernando Tatis Jr. was fine after a scary hit-by-pitch, rallying San Diego on the basepaths with the game-winning run on Saturday.
4. New York Mets (22-13) | Last week: 2 (-2)
The Mets dropped both series last week, and they haven’t won a series since sweeping the Phillies a couple of weeks ago. Struggles with runners on base was the story for New York in yesterday’s double-header sweep.
5. New York Yankees (19-15) | Last week: 5
The Yankees also lost both their series last week, but Aaron Judge homered three times and is hitting an insane .423 over a month into the season. Free-agent acquisition Max Fried has been on fire all season, too—now at 6-0 with a 1.01 ERA.
6. Philadelphia Phillies (19-15) | Last week: 7 (+1)
Before ultimately falling in extra innings to the Diamondbacks, the Phillies showed major fight by climbing back from a 7-1 deficit to force the extra frame. Overall, it was a good week for Philadelphia, a club that’s won three consecutive series.
7. San Francisco Giants (22-13) | Last week: 4 (-3)
Willy Adames homered twice in yesterday’s win against the Rockies, helping the Giants win their third straight game. On the mound, Robbie Ray had one of the best performances of the year with eight strikeouts and two hits allowed over seven scoreless innings.
8. Chicago Cubs (21-14) | Last week: 8
Not only were the Cubs shut out versus the Brewers yesterday, but starting pitcher Shota Imanaga suffered a hamstring injury that could keep him out for weeks. Still, Chicago took the series against Milwaukee and is in early control of the NL Central.
9. Seattle Mariners (20-13) | Last week: 9
The Mariners are 8-2 in their past 10 games, and starting pitcher George Kirby is nearing his 2025 debut after a strong rehab start over the weekend.
10. Cleveland Guardians (20-14) | Last week: 10
Daniel Schneemann’s grand slam in the ninth inning on Saturday to lift the Guardians to a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays was one of the most clutch swings of the young season. Cleveland goes to Washington before hosting Philadelphia for a good weekend test.
11. Kansas City Royals (19-16) | Last week: 18 (+7)
12. Arizona Diamondbacks (18-16) | Last week: 12
13. Atlanta Braves (15-18) | Last week: 14 (+1)
14. Houston Astros (17-16) | Last week: 16 (+2)
15. Boston Red Sox (18-18) | Last week: 11 (-4)
16. Cincinnati Reds (18-17) | Last week: 13 (-3)
17. Oakland Athletics (19-16) | Last week: 19 (+2)
18. Texas Rangers (17-18) | Last week: 15 (-3)
19. Milwaukee Brewers (17-18) | Last week: 17 (-2)
20. Tampa Bay Rays (16-18) | Last week: 20
