A blockbuster trade and Shohei Ohtani’s impending return to the mound are major factors in the 2025 MLB power rankings for the middle of June.
1. Detroit Tigers (46-27) | Last week: 1
Even though they had a 2-3 week, Detroit still has the best record in baseball—and their AL Central lead has only grown with Minnesota, Cleveland, and Kansas City all having 2-8 stretches over their past 10 games. The Tigers won’t run into another current division leader until taking on the Astros in the middle of August.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (43-29) | Last week: 3 (+1)
As alluded to, Shohei Ohtani is set to return to the mound tonight for his first pitching appearance in nearly two years, and it’s just in time for another series versus the Padres after taking two-of-three games in San Diego last week. Ohtani’s return combined with a 4-2 stretch against the Padres and Giants pushes Los Angeles into the No. 2 spot.
3. New York Mets (45-27) | Last week: 2 (-1)
Also helping the Dodgers was New York suffering a home sweep versus the Rays over the weekend, and Philadelphia has surged to cut the NL East lead back to 2.5 games. Atlanta has obviously been a disappointment this season, but the Mets will take on the Braves, Phillies, and Braves again over their next 10 games.
4. Chicago Cubs (44-28) | Last week: 5 (+1)
Chicago lost a series to the previously cold Phillies to begin last week, but it came at Citizens Bank Park—and could have easily been a series victory with the first game going 11 innings. After that, Chicago rebounded with three wins in four low-scoring games versus Pittsburgh, while the rival Cardinals went 1-6 on the week to fall out of the top 10 of the power rankings.
5. New York Yankees (42-28) | Last week: 4 (-1)
The Yankees were swept in Boston over the weekend after dropping two of three against the Red Sox last weekend at home—so that alone is enough to push New York down a spot. Aaron Judge had three strikeouts in all three games to drop his average from .392 to .378, so he’ll try to get on track starting tonight versus the Angels.
6. Philadelphia Phillies (42-29) | Last week: 7 (+1)
It felt like the Phillies could have realistically tumbled down a few spots with a 1-9 record over 10 games as of last week’s power rankings, but they rose to the occasion by going 5-1 against the Cubs and Blue Jays. There has been little information about Bryce Harper’s return from a wrist injury, but he’s eligible to come off the IL tonight and will ideally be back for a huge series against the Mets this weekend.
7. San Francisco Giants (41-31) | Last week: 8 (+1)
The Giants made a bold, out-of-nowhere move to acquire Rafael Devers last night, and it might not be a coincidence the trade was made after a series loss to the Dodgers; if San Francisco is going to come out of the NL, they probably needed a superstar slugger like Devers to bolster the lineup.
8. Houston Astros (41-30) | Last week: 10 (+2)
Houston has started to pull away since taking over first place in the AL West, and walk-off wins on Saturday and Sunday could build momentum to further catapult up the AL standings. One concern for the Astros is being the only division leader with a losing record on the road (14-17).
9. San Diego Padres (39-31) | Last week: 6 (-3)
The past week for San Diego included losing a home series to the Dodgers, getting swept by the Diamondbacks (who are now back in contention), and seeing San Francisco acquire a difference-making bat with the Devers trade. That said, another four games versus LA over the next four nights gives the Padres a chance to take the NL West lead… or see the 3.0-game deficit grow.
10. Tampa Bay Rays (39-32) | Last week: 13 (+3)
Sweeping the Mets at Citi Field will certainly garner some attention for Tampa Bay, and their confidence should be high when the Tigers come to town this weekend. Since May 20, the Rays have the best record in the MLB at 17-6.
11. Toronto Blue Jays (38-33) | Last week: 10 (-1)
12. Milwaukee Brewers (39-34) | Last week: 12
13. St. Louis Cardinals (37-35) | Last week: 9 (-4)
14. Seattle Mariners (36-34) | Last week: 14
15. Cincinnati Reds (37-35) | Last week: 18 (+3)
16. Arizona Diamondbacks (36-35) | Last week: 21 (+5)
17. Texas Rangers (36-36) | Last week: 20 (+3)
18. Minnesota Twins (35-35) | Last week: 15 (-3)
19. Boston Red Sox (37-36) | Last week: 19
20. Cleveland Guardians (35-35) | Last week: 16 (-4)
21. Kansas City Royals (34-38) | Last week: 17 (-4)
22. Los Angeles Angels (33-37) | Last week: 22
23. Atlanta Braves (31-39) | Last week: 24 (+1)
24. Baltimore Orioles (30-40) | Last week: 25 (+1)
25. Washington Nationals (30-41) | Last week: 23 (-2)
26. Miami Marlins (28-41) | Last week: 28 (+2)
27. Pittsburgh Pirates (29-44) | Last week: 26 (-1)
28. Oakland Athletics (29-44) | Last week: 27 (-1)
29. Chicago White Sox (23-49) | Last week: 29
30. Colorado Rockies (14-57) | Last week: 30
