YouTube Video: The NFL Broadcast Angle Is Broken

Have you ever wondered if there’s a better way to watch NFL games? The latest YouTube video from Wolf Sports dives into why that might be the case.

We’re in an era of enormous 4K televisions, crystal-clear picture quality, and advanced data tracking. Yet, the main broadcast angle for NFL games across every network still behaves like we’re watching on 27-inch TVs from the mid-90s.

The camera angle for NFL games is too zoomed in for today. While televisions have become much better quality and cheaper as competition increased, the way we watch NFL games has mostly stayed the same. We still can’t see what’s happening on half the field, with the camera zooming in to focus on and track the ball instead of showing play in the secondary and routes run by receivers.

Decades ago, this was the only way. If you zoomed out, players would look blurry on small screens. However, the average TV size has increased from 27 inches in 1995 to an average of 55 inches today. But despite the arrival and continuous improvement of widescreen TVs, we’re still watching games almost the same way as we did on small, square TVs.

The technology is ready for a change. The audiences is ready. It’s time for the NFL and its broadcast partners to zoom out and let fans see more of the game they love.
