YouTube Video: Why the NFL Draft Should Be More Like Election Night

Over 10 millions fans watch the NFL Draft every spring on either ABC, ESPN, or NFL Network. The coverage of the biggest non-game event on the NFL calendar is similar across ESPN and NFL Network—and that’s heightened with ESPN now owning NFL Network. But what if things were different? Wolf Sports’ latest YouTube video explores allowing the NFL Draft to be covered more like Election Night.

Election Night Coverage

Every four years, much of the United States huddles around their televisions to watch the returns on presidential elections. They have a variety of options to choose from for where to watch: CNN, Fox News, ABC, CBS, and more. Each provides their own type of coverage, and a few options are available via free over-the-air channels. Imagine if the NFL Draft started working this way.

The Possibilities

NBC has elite production value with their sports coverage, including the NFL and Sunday Night Football. Mike Tirico anchoring coverage of the NFL Draft would be fun. FOX can bring some energy depending on the analysts they use. CBS would provide highly credible analysis, including potentially Tony Romo checking in to talk about the quarterbacks. And the streamers Netflix and Amazon can get involved if they want, potentially with creative coverage.

Business Concerns

A big reason why this is unlikely to happen anytime soon is that the NFL sells its draft rights, just like they sell game packages and the season opener. Only one network (currently NBC) can get Sunday Night Football and the Kickoff Game. However, those are select games—not an event like the draft including all 32 teams and introducing fans to its newest players. Also, broadening the coverage would bring in new fans—which is something the NFL focuses on.

Competition

Allowing every network to broadcast the NFL Draft live on television would lead to increased competition, forcing everyone—including ESPN and NFL Network ensuring their coverage stays top-notch—to up their game.
