2018 MLB Trade Deadline: Who Should Be Buyers?

The MLB trade deadline is just one week away. There’s still another month of potential trades, via waiver deals, after the deadline (and as we saw last year with Justin Verlander, huge moves can be made then), but most of the action is likely to take place in the next several days. So, who should be “buying” as the deadline approaches?

New York Yankees

By almost all standards, the Yankees are having a great season in Aaron Boone’s first year as manager. However, they are still six games back of the juggernaut Red Sox and might need to make a move to compete with them in the postseason. A pitcher or two (in both the starting rotation and bullpen) could make a huge difference in tight October ballgames.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies might have pleasantly surprised themselves this season, as they are more than just competing for a playoff spot. Currently in first place in the NL East, Philadelphia has a chance to put their foot on the gas and win the division for the first time since 2011. A starting pitcher or corner outfielder could give the Phillies a boost. Maybe Cole Hamels will make a return to the team’s rotation.

Washington Nationals

Things continue to not look good in what could be Bryce Harper’s last season in Washington. At below .500, the Nationals might need to make a move before it’s too late to come back in the division or wild card race. If nothing else, shaking things up could be something Bryce Harper notes positively if his team attempted to right the ship and win as he hits free agency this winter.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are red-hot right now, winning their last ten games, so maybe they don’t need to make any moves that could ruin the roll they are currently on. These next handful of games might determine whether Pittsburgh wants to just go for it, and I probably would if I was them.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Paul Goldschmidt is in the final year of his contract, so this could be the last best chance the Diamondbacks have to compete for a World Series in quite some time. They reportedly kicked the tires on Manny Machado, but the division rival Dodgers got him, making it more necessary for Arizona to make a move. Zach Britton could be the target.
