Five Actors That Would Be Great With Mahershala Ali In ‘True Detective’

After weeks of rumors, they came true and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali will star in Season 3 of True Detective. First, this confirms True Detective is definitely coming back for another season after Season 2 was heavily criticized. Also, it’s a promising step casting Ali as one of the main characters. While I don’t believe Season 2 of True Detective was as bad as most thought, HBO will be looking to bounce back with Season 3 with an all-star cast—as they did with the first two seasons. There are a few actors in particular I’d love to see alongside Mahershala Ali next season. (Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson returning would be great, but I’m not including them in this list.)

 

Robert Downey Jr.

There are rumors of some HBO series based on the fictional character Perry Mason. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto are the main two involved in the rumors. Perhaps RDJ would be interested in starring alongside Ali in True Detective Season 3.

 

John Travolta

Like Robert Downey Jr., John Travolta is a two-time Oscar nominee that certainly has the acting chops to be great in anything he does. Did you watch Travolta as Robert Shapiro in FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson? He was truly great, and he would be an exciting addition to True Detective.

 

Charlize Theron

The versatile Charlize Theron is excellent in every role she plays, and there wouldn’t be much better gets for HBO than her. Theron could play a hero, a villain, or anything in between in True Detective.

 

Zac Efron

This might be more for Efron than anything. The 29-year-old has shown he can act, but True Detective might be able to vault him into getting really intense and serious parts, if he’s interested.

 

Reese Witherspoon

Granted, with Big Little Lies, Witherspoon might be too focused on that and not want to do another HBO series. But the relationship is there between her and HBO.

 

Idris Elba

Speaking of relationships with HBO, Idris Elba starred in one of HBO’s best series ever, The Wire. Elba also knows Matthew McConaughey from The Dark Tower, which is currently in theaters. The ability and demeanor Elba brings with his acting would fit perfectly in Season 3 of True Detective.
