‘Hard Knocks: The Buffalo Bills’ Episode 5 Superlatives

The drama was toned down in the finale of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills, but there were at least some funny moments after cuts were made.

Best moment: Josh Allen interview

There were a couple of interviews with Allen in last night’s episode, but this is about the serious one with Kyle Brandt—where he was asked about his wife’s acting in Sinners and was sincerely getting emotional about how proud he was. That was followed up by Brandt asking if Allen has a speech for winning a Super Bowl written down similar to how his wife might if she won an Academy Award, and the reigning NFL MVP said it’s all in his head… and he can picture the parade if they ever accomplish their ultimate goal.

Worst moment: The cuts

I don’t have a huge problem with the roster cuts not being aired for the world to see (Buffalo undoubtedly had input to make it that way), but Liev Schreiber’s voice was essentially what got featured early in the episode as the Bills went from 90 to 53 players. Overall, it spoke to the lack of drama in the five-episode run, and it could have been nice to at least see a conversation between management and someone like Jimmy Ciarlo being informed they want him on the practice squad.

Funniest moment: Frank Gore Jr. talks about food

The entire scene was hilarious with Gore being curious about the food situation in London by asking Travis Clayton about it—as the offensive tackle responded to a naïve Gore by saying the food is normal across the pond. Then, Gore explained his typical order from McDonald’s and Tyrell Shavers came in with a zinger:

Underrated moment: Josh Allen fake punches Shaq Thompson

Buffalo brought back former key defenders Jordan Poyer and Jordan Phillips at the end up camp, and their presence was understandably felt when they hit the practice field. A featured play came when Phillips laid out running back Ray Davis to the ire of the offensive linemen, and with everyone getting in Phillips’ face, Josh Allen jokingly acted like he punched linebacker Shaq Thompson outside of the miniature scrum.

Best quote: Keon Coleman

“You mic’d up? Every practice on yo’ federal a**.”

MVP: Josh Allen

Dion Dawkins and Tre’Davious White were the other primary “headliners” among key players, but Allen was the focus of Hard Knocks this year. Last night, he showed his soft side in the interview with Kyle Brandt, his funny side with clips of him taking the joke when being pranked by media staffers, and was named a team captain (to the surprise of no one). Time will tell if the visions of a Super Bowl parade come to fruition.
