Top Ten Tuesday: Best Christmas Commercials Of All-Time

Christmas is just one week away, and this week’s Top Ten Tuesday goes over the best Christmas commercials of all-time. There are hundreds of worthy ads that didn’t make the cut, but these ten are the best of the best for a variety of reasons.

10. AT&T

This one might not be the most Christmassy on the list, but a gingerbread family with the dad/husband voiced by Steve Buscemi is pretty funny. The ending is what makes this commercial a classic.

9. Microsoft

Microsoft’s 2018 holiday ad, “Reindeer Games”, features Owen Simmons and is all about inclusion. Unfortunately, many kids over the years with certain physical disabilities have been unable to use normal video game controllers well, but the Xbox Adaptive Controller helps Owen and others capture the joy of playing video games like their friends.

8. John Lewis & Partners

We have a couple of 2018 commercials back-to-back here, with this one featuring Elton John in the 2018 John Lewis & Partners Christmas Ad. The commercial perfectly captures how a simple Christmas gift and some belief (both in yourself and from loved ones) can go a long way and be more than just a gift.

7. Honey Nut Cheerios

Cheerios did a nice job of using the Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge to show that no one can resist Honey Nut Cheerios. This one gets a boost because it’s from last century and remains a timeless ad.

6. Hershey’s

The most timeless ad of the entire Top Ten Tuesday might be this one from Hershey’s. Original, creative, and catchy; there are no spoken words necessary, and it’s just 15 seconds, but it’s among the most memorable Christmas commercials of all-time.

5. Erste

From the animation, to the story, to the music, Erste’s 2018 Christmas commercial is simply great. It’s a feeling many people have gone through, and the essence of Christmas—with the belief in love, in Christmas, and in yourself—is perfectly displayed.

4. Apple

A couple of years ago, Apple had a similar commercial featuring Brad Garrett trying to fit in as a Frankenstein wanting to celebrate the holidays with everyone else. All it took was for one little girl to help people open their hearts to someone that wanted to be accepted.

3. Coca Cola

There have been many Coca Cola Polar Bear commercials over the years, and any of them could have made the top ten. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first commercial airing, which is big. The Christmas edition of the all-time classic Hilltop commercial could have also easily been on the list.

2. M&Ms

Over 20 years later, the M&Ms Christmas commercial with the talking M&Ms and Santa running into each other—and finally believing in each other—is still being replayed for a reason. It’s original and funny in just a dozen or so seconds.

1. Mercedes-Benz

Car companies typically have amazing commercials during the winter, and many of them should arguably be in the top ten—but Mercedes-Benz probably does the best job of any of the companies. This commercial featuring a cute golden retriever puppy was so good last year that they brought it back for a second consecutive year. And Jon Hamm (ad man Don Draper from AMC’s Mad Men) narrating with the puppy nametag saying, “To Sally” (the name of his daughter on the show), makes it all the more perfect.
