I don’t know how David Lynch comes up with this stuff. “Part 14” of Twin Peaks was one of the best episodes of the season. With flashbacks, a new character reveals, and a name reveal—among other things—more might have happened in “Part 14” than in any of the other episodes so far.
To start the episode, we got more insight into “Blue Rose” and the start of it. It turns out Gordon Cole and Phillip Jeffries were on the very first Blue Rose case. The case involved a woman named Lois Duffy, who Cole and Jeffries were investigating. When they got to her room, they heard a gunshot and went into the room to see Lois Duffy was shot in the stomach. She said, “I’m like the Blue Rose,” smiled, died, then disappeared. Then in the corner of the room they saw… Lois Duffy. Spooky stuff.
It sure sounds like Lois Duffy also had a doppelganger. Tammy, who was talking to Albert (he was briefing her on the Blue Rose and told the story about Duffy), suggested it was a “Tulpa.” I didn’t understand what she said, but that’s because I never heard that word before. “Tulpa.” It turns out, a Tulpa is something in Tibetan mythology that is “like conjured,” as Tammy puts it. How or why these Tulpas are formed? We don’t know.
We also found out from Diane that she has an estranged half-sister—Janey-E Jones. The connection between Evil Coop/Mr. C and Agent Cooper (and Dougie Jones) seems to be forming. Something might have happened 25 years ago that led to Dougie Jones being conjured—and also the argument between Diane and Janey-E might have something to do with all this. Janey-E certainly puts up with Dougie’s weird behavior like it’s normal.
Finally, Agent Cooper might be able to snap out of it, as Gordon and the FBI now at least are unknowingly going after him. Hopefully it happens soon, because there are only four episodes left. I’m ready to see the reaction from Janey-E when they go to arrest her and Dougie.
“We’re like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream… But who is the dreamer?” The dream sequence with Monica Bellucci was one of the best scenes of the series, as inside of the dream, Gordon had a flashback to the FBI events of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, when Cooper was telling him about the time and Phillip Jeffries appeared then disappeared. We’re starting to get answers…
Side note: I feel like David Lynch might have totally wished he thought of the dream-based movie, Inception. The 2010 Christopher Nolan film is a great one, though it might be too orderly for Lynch.
Among the most notable parts of the dream sequence parts from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me shown was when Phillip Jeffries pointed to Agent Cooper and said, “Who do you think that is there?” That line always puzzled me, and it was a part of Gordon’s dream so it’s probably important. Perhaps Jeffries just knew Agent Cooper would eventually fall victim to BOB?
To the town of Twin Peaks and Jack Rabbit’s Palace… I have no idea what happened there. Though Jack Rabbit’s Palace was slightly underwhelming, though it was still endearing that Bobby and Major Briggs would just sit there and tell stories. Bobby, new Sheriff Truman, Hawk, and Andy all headed 253 yards east and came across “Naido”, who I didn’t remember at first was with Agent Cooper in the Purple Room in “Part 3”.
Andy, who has come a long, long way after he couldn’t even see anyone in distress without crying 25 years ago, comforted Naido as they were wondering what was going on. Then at 2:53, the vortex in the sky started, which Andy was drug into where he met the Giant—who is turns out is “the Fireman”. It seems the whole entire story of what’s going on with everything was told to Andy, who calmly told a confused and amnesiac Hawk, Sheriff Truman, and Bobby the they need to go down the mountain and get Naido safe in a cell because “she’s very important.” We should find out more about this next week.
At the Great Northern Hotel, we found out James is a security guard—which is surprising. Anyway, it was his birthday and he was working with Freddie, who might be a major character moving forward. Like Agent Cooper (and now like Andy), Freddie encountered the Fireman. Freddie now has this rubber glove the he can’t take off but gives him superhuman strength, and he was told to leave London and travel all the way to Twin Peaks, Washington. Whoever is running things clearly has something in store for Freddie. It also seems the Great Northern is kind of haunted, as James went down to the furnace and was hearing creepy noises. Maybe it has something to do with the noise Ben and Beverly keep hearing?
The situation with Sarah Palmer… wow. She literally opened up her face and intimidated the harasser, before she swiftly bit him in the neck and killed him. There are strange things going on in the Palmer residence and with Sarah, but they got even stranger with this.
“Part 14” ended the same way most of these parts are ending—in the Roadhouse. More was revealed about Billy, as the daughter of Tina (who we haven’t met, at least not that the viewer is aware of). Apparently Tina, her daughter, and maybe her brother/brother-in-law (the daughter’s uncle) saw Billy run into their kitchen, bleeding like crazy, for about ten second before he left. We’re not sure who this daughter of Tina and the other woman she is talking to is, but it was an eerie situation, especially when the daughter mentioned her mom’s name is Tina. And how couldn’t she remember if her uncle was there during a situation like this?
The story moved forward in “Part 14”, and I anticipate it to continue accelerating as we get more answers—and hopefully a fully-functioning and aware Agent Cooper.
