Join now >Dante Pettis has had a good start to training camp.
The second-round rookie from Washington is reportedly doing very well on offense this summer, and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said they traded up 15 spots in the draft to get him because “he had a skill set that fit us.” Keiana Martin of 49ers.com writes that Pettis “has emerged as one of San Francisco’s most productive receivers through the first week of training camp.” The separation skills of Pettis is what most people are talking about, and that type of ability to get open gives him the potential to quickly climb the depth chart and get a lot of playing time as a rookie. Pettis is certainly going to have a big role on special teams after he set the NCAA record for punt returns during his college career, and he might also surprise with a big role on offense in 2018.

Tavon Austin has not lined up in the backfield during training camp yet.
Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News writes that Austin has “lined up in the slot, on the outside and taken handoffs on end-arounds,” but has not once lined up in the backfield as a traditional running back. Austin says the things he’s been doing “is pretty much what I’ll be doing,” but that hopefully he’ll be in the backfield if they need him there. The Cowboys have listed Austin as a running back, so it’s slightly peculiar that he hasn’t lined up in the backfield yet. Dallas wants to get him the ball, though, and a sizable amount of his touches could be on handoffs via end-arounds. It’ll be interesting to see what the Cowboys do offensively this season, but they might not reveal anything big until the regular season.

Andy Cohen of MiamiDolphins.com believes Mike Gesicki is showing great progress.
Cohen writes: “As the days of training camp have passed, we have begun to see a noticeable difference in rookie tight end Mike Gesicki.” The second-round pick from Penn State says he feels comfortable with the mental aspect of the game now and is just going out and playing instead of thinking—a major positive at a position rookies historically have struggled to make a huge impact. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill noted that “if you put the ball anywhere near [Gesicki], he has the ability to either jump and get it or reach out and get it. He has a huge catch radius.” The six-foot-six tight end had an amazing NFL combine that showed off his elite athleticism, and he was a productive player with the Nittany Lions. His performance as a blocker might determine the amount of playing time he gets, but there’s definite TE1 upside if he’s the clear starter for Miami.

Quincy Enunwa (thumb) is expected to miss one to two weeks, according to the Daily News.
Enunwa is probably going to miss the Jets’ first preseason game next Friday, and he could be in danger of missing the second one. New York has a crowded receiving group, so hopefully Enunwa can get back out there soon before he falls too far behind on the depth chart.

The Colts appear locked into a committee backfield.
Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star writes that it “doesn’t matter” who the starter in Indy’s backfield is because it’s going to be a committee with multiple options. Holder believes “the bigger issue is about who will get the most touches.” Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins, Christine Michael, and Robert Turbin have all been mixing in for first-team reps throughout training camp. Colts head coach Frank Reich says the weekly gameplan will be “opponent specific,” utilizing what each guy is good at; and he also said the running backs “will have their plays,” indicating that multiple guys will get a certain number of plays each game. Perhaps one of the backs can emerge as a 200-carry guy in 2018, but the group might be frustrating on a week-to-week basis for fantasy owners.

Antonio Brown’s injury is a quad strain, according to PFT.
Brown is only expected to miss a few practices, so the injury doesn’t sound serious. Perhaps Brown will sit out the first preseason game next week, but he might not have played much if at all anyway. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes with Brown’s status.

Antonio Brown (undisclosed injury) is day-to-day.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not disclose the body part Brown injured, but the star receiver has been sent from training camp back to Pittsburgh for evaluation. We don’t want to speculate, but hopefully it’s not anything too serious. We should get an update on Brown in the coming days.
