Join now >Marlon Mack is still wearing a brace on his left arm.
Mack is back to 100% after offseason shoulder surgery, but he’s still wearing the brace he’s worn since the injury last year. It could just be a precaution thing, but the brace probably won’t limit Mack if he decides to wear it during the season. The second-year back reportedly was “very physical” in Indy’s first padded practice of training camp, which is a good sign as he looks to establish himself as the lead guy in what’s expected to be a committee backfield.

Cam Newton believes 65-70 completion percentage is “certainly attainable.”
Newton says the mark is something that’s a goal of his, and he believes he can do it; a goal for the coaching staff with new offensive coordinator Norv Turner has been for Newton to increase his completion percentage, and Newton is on board. Newton said: “We have a lot of talent on the offensive side, and guys that can take a 2-yard and turn it into a 20 yards, and hopefully more than that. But it starts with me, and I have to be able to trust those guys and get the ball to them.” He also added that his mentality has to be to take things as many times as the defense gives it to you. More efficiency should help the offense as a whole, and it should be especially good for Newton and second-year back Christian McCaffrey, who is one of those guys that can take a short pass a long way.

Elijah McGuire is expected to miss 3-6 weeks with his broken foot.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the McGuire is getting surgery this week. The lower end of the timeline would mean there’s a chance the second-year back is ready for the start of the regular season, but the higher end of the timeline would keep him out for at least the first week or two of the season. Hopefully McGuire’s recovery goes well and he can get back on the field at 100% soon.

Lamar Miller is lighter and quicker this year.
Miller is down eight pounds from last year to 217 pounds, which is as light as he been since he was in Miami with the Dolphins. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle writes that Miller “is noticeably leaner, and his trademark acceleration is back” to start Texans training camp. Texans head coach Bill O’Brien says that he’s “really impressed with how Lamar’s come back, he’s really come back in good shape” and has “really improved in the passing game.” With D’Onta Foreman out indefinitely as he recovers from his torn Achilles from last season, Miller could get a heavy workload for Houston to start the season. After 3.7 yards per carry on 238 attempts (888 rushing yards) in a difficult year for the Texans, a lighter Miller is an obvious bounce-back candidate for 2018.

Elijah McGuire has suffered a fractured foot, according to Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says that McGuire will require surgery and could be a candidate to be placed on injured reserve with a return designation. This is a terrible break for the second-year back, as he had a real shot to earn a significant role in New York’s backfield. Earlier this offseason, he was compared to LaDainian Tomlinson by the team’s running back coach, but now, the Jets will rely on Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, Thomas Rawls, and rookie Trenton Cannon. They also reportedly brought in Alfred Morris for a visit.

Chris Carson has been “tearing it up” to start Seahawks training camp.
Healthy coming off his severe leg injury from Week 4 of last season, Carson is in a battle for the lead-back role for Seattle. John Boyle of Seahawks.com writes Carson “appears poised for a big role again” after he was the starter before his injury last season. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says that the second-year running back “has been remarkably fit” and is “really tearing it up.” Rashaad Penny figures to be the favorite to start for Seattle after they selected him in the first round of the draft, but this team preaches competition as much as any team in football. Carson could potentially win the starting job this summer.

The Jaguars believe Keelan Cole can be a huge factor at receiver for them.
After yesterday’s training camp practice, the undrafted second-year receiver was the second offensive player to speak at the press conference, after only quarterback Blake Bortles—which doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll have a big role on offense, but it’s worth noting. John Oehser of Jaguars.com writes it’s obvious “the Jaguars like the second-year receiver from Kentucky Wesleyan, and there is strong belief…he can be a big-time presence in the receiving corps.” Jacksonville has one of the league’s most crowded receiving groups, with the high-priced Marqise Lee and Donte Moncrief expected to lead the way; and there’s also 2017 fourth-round pick Dede Westbrook and 2018 second-round pick D.J. Chark. But Cole was very productive for the Jags last season, catching 42 passes for 784 yards (which led the team) and three touchdowns. He’s someone to keep an eye on throughout the preseason.
