2023 College Football Power Rankings: Week 5

College football looks extremely deep, with several teams having a case for the top few spots in the power rankings.

1. Georgia Bulldogs (4-0) | Last week: 1

The Georgia defense gave up more than you’d expected to a now-1-3 UAB team, but they racked up 49 points in their last non-conference game of the regular season until they face Georgia Tech on November 25. All-American tight end Brock Bowers recorded 121 yards and two touchdowns of Carson Beck’s 338 yards and three touchdowns through the air last week.

2. Michigan Wolverines (4-0) | Last week: 2

Jim Harbaugh’s return from a school-imposed three-game suspension was a triumphant one, with Mike Sainristil’s pick-six helping spark an eventual 24-point win after a close start to the game. The Wolverines allowed a 69-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Christian Dremel to begin the contest but held a then-3-0 Rutgers team out of the end zone the rest of the day.

3. Texas Longhorns (4-0) | Last week: 3

Byron Murphy II recorded two sacks and Jaylan Ford picked off a pass in a strong defensive effort by the Longhorns at Baylor. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has his guys rolling ahead of a conference matchup of unbeatens when Texas hosts Kansas this Saturday.

4. Florida State Seminoles (4-0) | Last week: 4

The missed kick by the Tigers late helped, but Florida State got a hard-fought road victory in overtime for their first win over Clemson since 2014. The Seminoles have two of the best wins of the year versus two of the Tiger teams, LSU and Clemson. Transfer portal addition Keon Coleman (two touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner in OT) has made a major impact on the outside for FSU.

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0) | Last week: 6 (+1)

In probably the game of the year to this point, Ohio State escaped South Bend with a tough win over Notre Dame on a last-second one-yard run by Chip Trayanum, which led to this post-game interview from head coach Ryan Day:

Star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. undoubtedly showed toughness in playing through his ankle injury after a heavy tape job during the gritty win.

6. USC Trojans (4-0) | Last week: 5 (-1)

Arizona State made it a game during Pac-12 After Dark, but five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) from Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams was too much to overcome as USC moved to 4-0. Next up for the Trojan is a trip to Boulder to face Coach Prime’s Buffaloes.

7. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0) | Last week: 7

Quarterback Drew Allar looked sharper than his previous outing, tossing four touchdowns while the Nittany Lions defense was absolutely smothering in a 31-0 win against Iowa. The Hawkeyes had just 76 total yards in Happy Valley.

8. Oregon Ducks (4-0) | Last week: NR

Oregon had a similar all-around dominant outing, and theirs silenced a Colorado team that was deservedly getting a lot of hype around the nation. The Ducks racked up 522 total yards in the 42-6 victory, and the lone touchdown they allowed came late in the game. Bo Nix was extremely efficient and accurate and totaled four touchdowns, including two to star receiver Troy Franklin

9. Washington Huskies (4-0) | Last week: 9

The Huskies defense was able to pick off three passes and were up a very comfortable 45-12 at halftime, though they did allow over 500 yards of offense to Cal. Michael Penix Jr. finally didn’t throw for over 400 yards after doing so in each of the first three games, but he tossed four touchdowns versus the Golden Bears.

10. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-1) | Last week: 10

Note Dame is definitely improved this season and could climb back up the rankings and into the CFP discussion throughout the rest of the year, but we like Alabama here at No. 10. The Crimson Tide took a bit to get going offensively in quarterback Jalen Milroe’s return to the starting lineup, but the defense was able to get off the field on third down (3/14 conversions allowed to Ole Miss) and the rushing attack showed good signs behind Jase McClellan (17 carries, 105 yards, one touchdown).
