With June just a few days away, this week’s 2023 MLB power rankings include plenty of shuffling throughout.
1. Tampa Bay Rays (39-16) | Last week: 1
Despite taking a 20-1 beating early in the week, the Rays won three-of-four from the Blue Jays and then took a wild weekend series versus the Dodgers.
2. Texas Rangers (33-19) | Last week: 2
The 19-run deficit in one game for the Rays helped allow the Rangers to take the MLB lead in run differential (+123). Texas battled a strong Orioles team over the weekend and came away with the series victory.
3. Baltimore Orioles (34-19) | Last week: 3
The Orioles faced a very challenging stretch as of late, emerging unscathed while continuing to look like a legitimate contender. Kyle Gibson (seven shutout innings) was great in helping Baltimore to take the third game of their series at the Yankees.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers (32-22) | Last week: 5 (+1)
The Dodgers lost a barnburner yesterday to ultimately lose the series against the Rays, but it was a solid week that began with a series win versus the Braves. Hopefully rookie pitcher Gavin Stone can put his slow start behind him.
5. Atlanta Braves (32-21) | Last week: 4 (-1)
It was a relatively down week for the Braves, but it was at least ended in emphatic fashion with an 11-run, 20-hit drubbing of the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball. Atlanta heads to Oakland and Arizona this week.
6. Houston Astros (31-21) | Last week: 7 (+1)
Yordan Alvarez homered twice in Houston’s 10-1 victory at the A’s, and the Astros will look to carry the momentum of the sweep over to hosting the Twins and Angels this week.
7. New York Yankees (32-23) | Last week: 6 (-1)
The Yankees beat the Padres on Saturday and Sunday to cap a fun series against Fernando Tatis Jr. and company. Now they go out west to face a surging Mariners team and the Dodgers.
8. Seattle Mariners (28-25) | Last week: 21 (+13)
While it was against the A’s and Pirates, the Mariners’ 6-1 week leads to a huge jump in the power rankings. Matchups with the Yankees and Rangers over the next several days will be a critical test.
9. Arizona Diamondbacks (30-23) | Last week: 12 (+3)
One of three teams in the National League with 30 wins, the Diamondbacks deserve a rise back into the top ten. A lengthy homestand continues with the Rockies and Braves this week.
10. Milwaukee Brewers (28-25) | Last week: 9 (-1)
A series win versus the Astros was followed up by losing three games at home to the Giants. But the bats woke up yesterday for Milwaukee, getting to Alex Cobb (previously a 2.17 ERA) for seven runs to avoid a sweep.
11. Boston Red Sox (28-25) | Last week: 8 (-3)
12. Miami Marlins (28-26) | Last week: 17 (+5)
13. New York Mets (27-27) | Last week: 13
14. Los Angeles Angels (28-26) | Last week: 16 (+2)
15. Minnesota Twins (27-26) | Last week: 10 (-5)
16. Philadelphia Phillies (25-28) | Last week: 14 (-2)
17. Toronto Blue Jays (28-26) | Last week: 11 (-6)
18. San Francisco Giants (27-26) | Last week: 18
19. Detroit Tigers (25-26) | Last week: 22 (+3)
20. Pittsburgh Pirates (26-26) | Last week: 20
21. St. Louis Cardinals (24-31) | Last week: 15 (-6)
22. San Diego Padres (24-29) | Last week: 23 (+1)
23. Cincinnati Reds (24-29) | Last week: 26 (+3)
24. Cleveland Guardians (23-29) | Last week: 24
25. Colorado Rockies (24-30) | Last week: 27 (+2)
26. Chicago Cubs (22-30) | Last week: 19 (-7)
27. Washington Nationals (23-30) | Last week: 25 (-2)
28. Chicago White Sox (22-33) | Last week: 28
29. Kansas City Royals (16-38) | Last week: 29
