The MLB All-Star break has arrived, so now is a great time to see where every team stands in our updated power rankings.
1. Philadelphia Phillies (62-34) | Last week: 1
There was a letdown over the weekend by losing two of three to the A’s, but Philadelphia swept the Dodgers to solidify their standing as the top team in baseball. Tomorrow night, we’ll see Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, and a scorching Trea Turner all start in the infield for the NL.
2. Baltimore Orioles (58-38) | Last week: 2
Behind the Phillies, all the top teams are struggling—which keeps Baltimore from dropping out of the No. 2 spot despite a 1-5 week. The Orioles won’t get another shot at the Yankees until late September, but another arm could be added over the next couple of weeks to make them AL favorites.
3. Cleveland Guardians (58-37) | Last week: 4 (+1)
As stated last week, everyone seems to need a soft reset, and that includes Cleveland after a 2-5 week and a couple of shutout losses versus the Rays. Still, they have the best record in the AL, along with the largest division lead (4.5 games) as others have taken advantage of top teams slipping up.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers (56-41) | Last week: 3 (-1)
Yes, they have injuries; but the Dodgers had to be moved down after being swept by the Phillies and then dropping a weekend series to Detroit. Los Angeles being rumored for Luis Robert Jr. or Randy Arozarena makes a ton of sense, as the lineup must lengthen for them to overcome Philadelphia and others in October.
5. New York Yankees (58-40) | Last week: 5
Rookie Ben Rice blasted a three-run home run in the ninth inning yesterday to put New York up with a chance to sweep Baltimore, but they then blew it in the bottom of the inning to fall in heartbreaking fashion. Now, what should have been a needed turnaround before the break has been soured.
6. Atlanta Braves (53-42) | Last week: 7 (+1)
Atlanta faces the largest division gap in the majors (8.5 games back in the NL East), but it’s tough to argue against them being the biggest threat to Philly in the fall. This week, they avoided a letdown away from home by splitting with the Diamondbacks and taking two games versus San Diego.
7. Milwaukee Brewers (55-42) | Last week: 6 (-1)
Milwaukee is another top squad that has limped into the break, and they have yet to win a series in July with the entire NL Central suddenly climbing back into striking distance. Keep an eye on a move in the rotation this month after the Dallas Keuchel experiment didn’t pan out.
8. Minnesota Twins (54-42) | Last week: 8
The Twins had Blake Snell take a perfect game into the seventh inning against them yesterday, but Manuel Margot broke it up then tied things up with a two-run double in the final frame before a “Little League home run” walked it off for San Francisco. Still, Minnesota has to feel good about where they’re at heading into the break.
9. Boston Red Sox (53-42) | Last week: 9
Boston is suddenly 4.5 games behind in the AL East with a 4-2 week compounded by struggles for the Orioles and Yankees. The aggressive play style is one that others should take note of, and the Red Sox will hope to stay hot for a trip to take on the Dodgers out of the break.
10. Seattle Mariners (52-46) | Last week: 10
Seattle remains in the top ten as a division leader, but the Astros are now just one game back, and the defending champion Rangers—getting healthy at some point—are lurking (5.0 games back). Fortunately, Julio Rodriguez has seemed to break out of his struggles with his average jumping from .247 to .267 over the past week.
11. Kansas City Royals (52-45) | Last week: 11
12. Houston Astros (50-46) | Last week: 14 (+2)
13. St. Louis Cardinals (50-46) | Last week: 12 (-1)
14. New York Mets (49-46) | Last week: 16 (+2)
15. Arizona Diamondbacks (49-48) | Last week: 15
16. San Diego Padres (50-49) | Last week: 13 (-3)
17. Tampa Bay Rays (48-48) | Last week: 1`7
18. Texas Rangers (46-50) | Last week: 18
19. Pittsburgh Pirates (48-48) | Last week: 20 (+1)
20. Cincinnati Reds (47-50) | Last week: 22 (+2)
21. Chicago Cubs (47-51) | Last week: (23 (+2)
22. San Francisco Giants (47-50) | Last week: 19 (-3)
23. Detroit Tigers (47-50) | Last week: 24 (+1)
24. Toronto Blue Jays (44-52) | Last week: 25 (+1)
25. Washington Nationals (44-53) | Last week: 21 (-4)
26. Los Angeles Angels (41-55) | Last week: 26
27. Oakland Athletics (37-61) | Last week: 27
28. Colorado Rockies (34-63) | Last week: 28
29. Miami Marlins (33-63) | Last week: 29
30. Chicago White Sox (27-71) | Last week: 30
