Strengths

Traditional north-south runner. Great determination. Runs extremely hard and refuses to go down. Superb contact balance. Tremendous strength and leg drive. Lowers his shoulder into contact. Sheds arm tackles and has defenders bounce off him. Falls forward when tackled. Often takes multiple defenders to get him on the ground. Impressive feet for a bigger back. Wastes no time with a clear running lane. Very good build-up speed to rip off chunk gains. Patience and vision are great on outside runs. Elusive to make the first man miss in space. Terrific vision in the open field. Always seems to take the optimal path to maximize yardage and follow blocks when he reaches the second level. Sudden stop and swipe move to make aggressive defenders miss. Has some shake to set up defenders before sticking his foot in the ground. Aware of the yardage needed for a first down and will get there. Very soft hands. Catches the ball away from his body and shows an ability to adjust to off-target throws. Will stick his nose in as a pass protector. Violent and would rather lower his shoulder than go out of bounds. Usually quiet but had an edge when defenders pushed him to show it. Experience with various running plays in Chip Kelly’s offense.

Weaknesses

Runs upright despite the strength/power he shows. Patience can be more consistent behind the line of scrimmage. Early explosiveness is just average and sometimes shows when a small crease closes quickly. Not as elusive when faced with backfield penetration. Had some focus drops.

Conclusion

Overall, Charbonnet is an old-school runner with an impressive blend of size, power, and determination in addition to new-age traits. He has a very similar running style to Nick Chubb and should be relied on to handle at least 15-18 weekly touches for an NFL offense.
