Strengths

Plus length at his size. Excellent footwork to cover vertically out of the press. Pins routes along the sideline. Fast in the side shuffle. Phenomenal ability to get his head around and continue running with wide receivers on downfield passes. Never seems to panic in coverage. Tremendous preventing completions at the catch point. Aggressive to recover and break up throws. Will spin late to avoid pure face guarding and turn around while staying controlled. Very effective defending jump balls. Extremely smooth to completely flip his hips and burst out of the cover transition. Great acceleration. Excellent awareness in zone coverage to fall back and help on passing concepts with routes all away from him. Good vision to pass off crossing routes. Outstanding play recognition to play screens and short passes. Will dart around blockers to make tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Confident in coverage and shows it. Very willing tackler on the outside. Wraps up bigger opponents. Shows major intensity after making tackles. Tough and will get in on scrums. Takes on blocks with physicality. Comes in fast as a blitzer. Experience at both left and right cornerback. Will drop into the slot. Not used in shadow coverage but showed well versus top wide receivers in 2023.

Weaknesses

Average long speed could allow opponents to get a step. Movements can be inefficient mirroring routes. Allows separation on sharper route breaks. Will favor bail technique and allow a ton of space at times. Too often falls a step behind playing cushion coverage. Might be vulnerable to late action by vacating his zone. Needs to be more prepared to stay with his man on broken plays. Hasn’t shown much of an ability to play the ball in the air for interceptions. Shaky ball skills when he does get his hands on it. Didn’t do as well defending Ohio State wideouts in 2022 CFB Playoff matchup (particularly in off coverage).

Conclusion

Overall, Lassiter is a very competitive cornerback that excels in the press and knows how to prevent completions at the catch point. His skillset, mentality, and improvements made in 2023 should boost his outlook for teams targeting a cornerback in Round 2.
