Strengths

Big overall frame with a thick lower half. High motor. Good initial burst for his size and shows an ability to get a jump on the snap. Relentless taking on blockers as he works to the quarterback. Very good power rush. Fights with his hands as a rusher. Slaps down the reach of blockers on speed rushes. Very effective inside swim move. Does a nice job on inside moves in general. Will use an inside counter spin. Great overall pursuit and hustle. Doesn’t give up on plays. Absorbs opponents when he gets into the backfield. Aggressive slanting inside and helping in the trenches versus the run. Accurate hand placement on the shoulders of offensive tackles. Strong to extend and shed. Shows he will use both hands to shed at the point of attack. Will get in the backfield to blow up some outside runs. Draws holds versus the run and knows how to sell them. Experience with short zone drops. Mostly a stand-up rusher on the right side but has played on both sides of the formation. Saw snaps kicked inside as a three-technique. Experience running stunts from inside alignment. Had a sack and was close to a bunch more versus Caleb Williams (USC 2023). Recorded sacks versus plenty of top quarterbacks and opponents.

Weaknesses

Limited explosiveness/athleticism and reliant on size/effort. Lacks length for his frame. Has trouble capturing the corner and bending/flattening when he does. Should be better setting the edge considering his size. Doesn’t control things or get free to make tackles for himself enough on runs in his direction. Overall instincts and play recognition are lacking. Delayed in diagnosing plays at the mesh point. Can be slow to find the ball in general. Slow playing quarterback keeper and outside run on goal-line touchdowns versus USC (2023).

Conclusion

Overall, Trice is a relentless edge defender that shows flashes of being a more complete player, but mostly wins with size and effort. The production versus top competition bodes well for his NFL transition as either a 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 defensive end with versatility to kick inside at times.
