Strengths
Ideal size and plus length. Excellent feet to mirror in man coverage. Sticks to opponents using various techniques. Gets in the face of opponents playing press coverage. Very strong jamming opponents. Quick feet immediately getting into the side shuffle out of press alignment. Terrific speed and acceleration. Phenomenal burst breaking on the ball. Agile in and out of breaks. Stays tight on receivers defending vertical routes. Jostles with opponents defending the deep ball without grabbing. Tremendous ability to track and play the ball in the air defending deep down the sideline. Very fluid covering out-and-up double moves. Crossed up at times in the side shuffle but is very quick flipping his hips and recovering. Stays on top of opponents defending short fade routes in the end zone. Exceptional ability to plant and burst to match routes working back to the quarterback. Will blanket stop routes on the outside. Like a shadow defending comebacks. Great overall awareness and instincts in coverage. Closes off inside releases on short routes. Accurate getting a hand in defending slants. Outstanding accuracy and feel to poke the ball away at the catch point. Stays on top of drag routes and crossing routes. Will recover if he falls a step behind. Excellent awareness to read the quarterback in short zone coverage and position himself in the passing lane. Very quick jumping on underneath routes as a zone defender. Outstanding play recognition to recognize route combinations. Has the size and strength to neutralize tight ends. Soft hands to high point the ball. Tremendous catch focus and instincts shown on juggling interception on the ground versus Vanderbilt (2024). Capable of doing damage with the ball in his hands. Typically a left cornerback but played both sides and saw snaps in the slot. Aggressive tackling after allowing a catch. Can deliver a crushing hit at the catch point as a zone defender. Will wrap up to tackle on runs to the edge. Keeps outside contain on runs to the perimeter. Positions himself to tackle when aligned closer to the box.
Weaknesses
Can be a tick slow opening his hips out of press coverage and lose a step at release. Needs to be careful about being on top of receivers too much throughout the route and drawing a flag. Beaten off the line and allowed a fade/go ball touchdown to Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (2024). Penalized for pass interference in the end zone on another fade/go ball to Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (2024). Strength and physicality as a tackler doesn’t match what he does in coverage. Could keep his eyes up for wrap-up tackles versus bigger opponents. Would like to see more relentless pursuit away from the play. Missed the entire 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in January of 2025.

Conclusion
Overall, McCoy is a technical, talented cover cornerback who can press opponents and play both man and zone coverage at a high level. If healthy, the ability should outweigh the trouble he had in his final game versus Ohio State and the missed 2025 season.
