Strengths

Thick frame and above-average length. Natural athleticism and quickness. Outstanding speed at his size. Extremely fluid for a bigger edge. Impressive change-of-direction skills and ability to flatten at his size. Tremendous burst. Often draws double teams and/or help as a rusher. Encouraging ability to string rush moves together. Uses shake and active hands to slap away reach on speed rushes. Light feet for skip moves as a rusher. Shows a late rip move. Quick and athletic making an inside move. Will look to counter inside if he gets too wide on his rush. Flashes exceptional strength on power rushes. Pairs a spin move with power rush to push the pocket. Spin move in general is effective. Rangy finisher due to size and athleticism. Experience playing both sides of the formation. Comfortable going from standing up to putting two hands in the dirt. Saw snaps shaded on the interior. Very good overall play recognition and instincts. Strong holding his position when able to extend and anchor versus the run. Quick crashing inside and slipping past blocks. Fast into the backfield to tackle on outside runs. Quick feet getting off blocks. Gives very good effort away from the action. Will hustle to make tackles down the field. Excellent on a goal-line stand versus Missouri (2024). Good feet/quickness dropping back in coverage. Active and aware playing routes into his area on short zone drops.

Weaknesses

Would like him to be more controlled when his rush moves don’t win. Might be lacking late power to finish on bull rushes. Gets bumped backwards more than he should as a rusher. Can get caught up when rushing in traffic. Will get controlled when opponents get their hands inside. Want to see more consistency keeping his shoulders square with a balanced base versus the run. Could be more disciplined holding ground as a backside defender to prevent cutback opportunities. Might have trouble getting low to create leverage. Appears to have a body type that could put on too much weight with age.

Conclusion

Overall, Scourton is a strong, talented edge defender with impressive movement skills and athleticism at his size. The combination of power and fluidity can be molded into a more complete player as one of the youngest prospects in the class.
