NFL Betting Tips For Newcomers

The NFL is one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States, with tens of thousands of people attending every game and millions more watching at home. This popularity is due to a number of factors, including the fact that it is a relatively simple sport to understand, it is highly competitive, and there is a strong sense of camaraderie among fans of different teams.

In the past few years, people have bet more and more on games in association with wide legalization across the U.S. Users can look around for the best odds on the best sports betting sites. But you should a) always bet responsibly, only placing a wager that you can afford to lose; and b) know what you are doing. If you are new to sports betting, these are some of the basics to help get you started.

Know The Odds

There are three types of betting odds for NFL betting: point spread, moneyline, and total. The point spread is the most common type of bet, and it is simply a bet on which team will win by a certain number of points. For example, if the New England Patriots are playing the Miami Dolphins, and the point spread is -7, that means that the Patriots must win by more than 7 points for you to win your bet. If they only win by 6 points, then you lose your bet.

The moneyline is a bet on which team will simply win the game outright. This type of bet is usually used when there is a big favorite and a big underdog. Sticking with a Patriots-Dolphins matchup, but this time the moneyline is -350 for the Patriots and +280 for the Dolphins, that means that you would need to bet $350 on the Patriots just to win $100, while you would only need to bet $100 on the Dolphins to win $280 as the underdogs.

The total is a bet on how many points will be scored in the game by both teams combined. For example, if the total is set at 45 and the final score ends up being 24-20 (44 total points scored), then you would lose your bet because 45 points were not scored.
