False narratives are not uncommon in sports media and across social media. We’ve seen it with people who probably didn’t watch much of Josh Allen at Wyoming—or just didn’t know what they were looking for—say the future NFL MVP was certain to be a bust and was a horrible pick by the Bills. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix arguably got as much hate as Allen during the pre-draft process, and the criticism was totally baseless.
The narrative surrounding Nix was that he is a “low-ceiling prospect” with a “weak arm.” This week’s YouTube video from Wolf Sports dives into Nix’s game film from his college career to show the narrative simply wasn’t based in reality.
The Bo Nix Narrative
Again, the narrative is that Nix is some weak-armed quarterback who would not be able to play at a high level in the NFL. After his success as a rookie, the critics then said that Nix was simply a product of a perfect marriage with Broncos head coach Sean Payton. However, Payton himself has defended his quarterback and hit back hard at the critics multiple times since taking him No. 12 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Sean Payton when asked about people saying his quarterback found the perfect situation:
“You know, it almost discredits the athlete. But it fits the NARRATIVE for those who had him ranked where they had him. So we’re not gonna get away from our narratives, are we? We’re gonna… pic.twitter.com/vQ9bc52cLh

Film Breakdown
If you actually watch the games, the film tells a completely different story than the mainstream narrative. Nix not only doesn’t have a weak arm, but he has some wicked arm talent that’s actually reminiscient of some of the NFL’s top gunslingers like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.
Success as a Rookie
Nix had the third most touchdowns for a rookie in NFL history, yet the pundits insist his rookie season was “solid” and a product of playing for Payton. But it’s funny, you never hear how Patrick Mahomes plays for Andy Reid in what’s probably been the best situation in the league for a quarterback since he took over for the Chiefs. Nix doubters also say he throws “too many short passes”—while Mahomes himself, a great quarterback, throws a ton of short passes! Both Mahomes and Nix do what it takes to move the ball.
Groupthink
We saw this story before with Allen, who became so good—despite multiple playcallers and rotating supporting casts while playing for a defensive head coach—that the haters sort of ignored the terrible things they said about him as a player. Unfortunately, Nix playing for an offensive-minded head coach likely means any and all success will be chalked up to that—with the pundits never admitting they were wrong about his arm talent.
