ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky recently went viral for having Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson as his top quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. He’s been getting hammered for the take—but should he be? The latest Wolf Sports YouTube video hits on why going against consensus certainly doesn’t automatically make you “wrong.”

The 2018 QB debate
You might remember back in 2018, when the “analysis” surrounding the quarterback class was all about pitting the prospects against each other. For example, it’s like you weren’t allowed to be high on both Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson (or even one of them, really, with most declaring them subpar prospects). That’s not how it should be, but we see this repeat itself year after year.
The Dan Orlovsky debate
On The Pat McAfee Show, things pretty much got off the rails. Instead of talking about why he likes Ty Simpson (as he did previously), Orlovsky questioned what big games national championship quarterback Fernando Mendoza performed well in. However, on the flip side, it’s not like Orlovsky shouldn’t be allowed to form a contrary opinion about prospects.
We’ve seen this before
To be clear, we don’t believe Simpson is on the same level as a prospect as Allen, Jackson, and other “hits” that go against narratives like Bo Nix. But the point is that straying against convention is not something that should be automatically shouted down. Thinking for yourself is what does lead to the big hits everyone else missed.
