WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron suffered a torn ACL.

This was the fear and expectation after McCarron was injured during last night's preseason game, and unfortunately the MRI confirmed the injury today. McCarron's season is over, and the Falcons will almost certainly be in search of another veteran quarterback to bring in behind Matt Ryan. However, undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks has dual threat ability and played in 36 games during his college career at Florida and Arkansas. Perhaps Georgia product Jake Fromm of the Bills will be a trade target in the next couple of weeks. McCarron should be 100% for next season, and hopefully he's feeling better soon after a very disappointing injury.

A.J. McCarron (knee) has been ruled out for the rest of tonight.

McCarron limped to the locker room, and it’s obviously not a great sign that he’s being ruled out of a preseason game. The veteran quarterback is set to back up Matt Ryan this season, and hopefully this isn’t a long-term thing.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

The Falcons signed A.J. McCarron.

Atlanta needed to add at quarterback, and they bring in the veteran former Bengal and Texan. McCarron would have plenty of weapons to work with if he's forced into the lineup for Matt Ryan this season.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

The Texans are re-signing A.J. McCarron.

Bill O'Brien keeps the trusted backup in the mix behind franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson. McCarron is one of the league's best backup quarterbacks, but ideally Watson will stay healthy and on the field so McCarron is not forced into action in 2020.

AJ McCarron (thumb) is "good to go" for Week 1.

McCarron missed most of the summer with a thumb injury, but he'll be ready to back up Deshaun Watson to open the season as expected. McCarron is one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league for 2019.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron suffered a thumb injury.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle says McCarron may miss the preseason with the injury. This obviously isn't ideal as McCarron looked to get live game reps in Bill O'Brien's offense during the preseason, but it sounds like he should be OK to back up Deshaun Watson in Week 1. The Texans are expected to sign another quarterback soon.

The Texans are signing A.J. McCarron, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

There was some thought that the Raiders, who clearly like McCarron, would bring him back at a lesser cost after cutting him last week. But the 28-year-old is landing with Bill O'Brien and the Texans as Deshaun Watson's backup. McCarron is obviously a different type of quarterback than Watson, but he'd be able to fill in nicely for O'Brien and the offense if called upon.

The Raiders released A.J. McCarron, according to multiple reports.

The Raiders just talked about how comfortable they were with their quarterback situation—including McCarron—at the NFL Combine, but they are now moving in another direction. McCarron was due $5 million, and releasing him is zero cap hit, so perhaps Oakland will bring him back at a lesser price. If not, plenty of teams will be interested in signing him as their backup.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron sees action in blowout loss to the Niners.

McCarron replaced Derek Carr in the fourth quarter with the game in hand, completing one-of-three passes for eight yards. It was clearly just a way to get Carr out of the game since the offensive line couldn't protect him, so McCarron should slot back in as the No. 2 in Week 10.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

The Bills have traded quarterback A.J. McCarron to the Raiders, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Jon Gruden has not been shy about expressing frustration with his backup quarterback situation, so the Raiders went ahead and traded for McCarron to hopefully sure-up that spot. This means Buffalo's starting quarterback is down to rookie Josh Allen and second-year quarterback Nathan Peterman. Allen offers the most fantasy upside because of his rushing upside, but Peterman might be the starter to open the year against a tough schedule.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron is “ready to go” for the Bills.

McCarron did not play in yesterday’s preseason game against the Bengals, but Bills head coach Sean McDermott says he’s back and ready. This quarterback competition might stretch to the fourth preseason game this Thursday.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron (shoulder) is practicing on a limited basis.

With the important third preseason game coming up this Sunday, McCarron is trying to tough his his right shoulder injury and play in the game. If McCarron is unable to play, rookie Josh Allen might be able to seize the starting job with a solid performance versus the Bengals.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

Update: A.J. McCarron (shoulder) is day-to-day.

It's not a hairline fracture in McCarron's collarbone, and it's apparently any other serious injury with his shoulder, so he could return to practice soon. Given McCarron has been waiting for this opportunity to start since he's entered the NFL, he'd probably going to tough it out as soon as possible. McCarron probably needs to play in the team's third preseason game this Sunday if he's going to be the team's starter.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron did not suffer a fracture in his collarbone, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The initial reports said it was a hairline fracture in McCarron's collarbone suffered in last week's preseason game, but that's apparently not the case after further testing. Now we need to wait for more news to come out on the extent of McCarron's injury, but for now consider him week-to-week. With Josh Allen announced as the starter for Buffalo's third preseason game, the injury unfortunately might have forced McCarron out of the quarterback competition, especially with Allen impressing through two preseason games.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron has a hairline fracture in his collarbone, according to multiple reports.

Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News was the first to report the news, though the Bills did not confirm the extent of the injury; however, now multiple outlets are reporting McCarron did indeed fracture his collarbone. This is really tough to hear for McCarron, who was looking to win the starting quarterback job for the Bills after sitting behind Andy Dalton in Cincinnati for a few years. McCarron appeared to suffer the injury on a big hit from Browns defensive end Myles Garrett in the first quarter, and he actually continued playing through the injury until Josh Allen was inserted into the game. This suddenly turns into a two-man quarterback competition between Allen and second-year quarterback Nathan Peterman. Allen has played steady while showing major flashes through two preseason games, and we think the rookie is the favorite to open the season on September 9 against Baltimore. We'll see who starts next week's important third preseason game. McCarron is probably week-to-week.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron has a right shoulder injury.

McCarron started this preseason game for the Bills and probably wasn't going to play anymore anyway, but the team has ruled him out for the game with 9:02 remaining. On the Browns broadcast, Bernie Kosar said he anticipated something being announced soon because McCarron did not look good on the sideline after taking a lot of hits when he was at quarterback. We just have to hope this shoulder injury isn't anything too serious. The Bills should give an update later tonight or tomorrow.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

The Bills have signed quarterback A.J. McCarron.

This came a bit out of nowhere with the team announcing it, but it was basically a perfect match as the game of quarterback musical chairs seemingly ended with both the Bills and McCarron the only two left standing. The team says it's a two-year deal for McCarron, and it'll give him a chance to finally become a starting quarterback for a team after spending the last four years stuck behind Andy Dalton in Cincinnati. However, the Bills appear poised to move up for a quarterback in next month's draft, so we'll see what happens.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron won his grievance case against the Bengals, according to Ian Rapoport.

After four season with the Bengals, the former Alabama quarterback is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in March when free agency begins. This is a huge win for McCarron, who was in danger of not having enough accrued season to be an unrestricted free agent, which likely would have meant him spending another season in Cincinnati as a backup if no team gave up premium draft picks for him. Now McCarron is likely to receive a lot of interest on the free agent market, with the Browns the easiest team to connect given they almost traded for him ahead of the deadline during the season. The plan for Cleveland might be to bring in McCarron along with a rookie via the first or fourth overall pick in this year's draft, but the former Alabama quarterback is expected to have more suitors than just the Browns. Keep in mind, there are a ton of potential free agent quarterbacks available, though, and it's possible there aren't enough spots available for everyone to get a starting gig.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron's grievance case should be decided this week.

Multiple reports indicate the arbitrator's decision should come sometime between now and Friday after McCarron filed for a grievance late last year. The issue for the Bengals quarterback comes from his rookie season, when he was placed on the non-football injury list at the start of his rookie training camp and did not get on the active roster until December of that season, which was not enough to count for an accrued season toward free agency. McCarron is arguing he was healthy and should not have been on the non-football injury list. If McCarron loses his case, he will be a restricted free agent, which would make it unlikely another team is able to sign him without giving up a lot to Cincinnati. If McCarron wins, he would be an unrestricted free agent and free to sign with any team when the new league year begins in March. This is big for the 27-year-old quarterbacks career as he is looking to show he can be a franchise quarterback for someone as soon as possible.

A.J. McCarron gets time in Week 14.

With the Bengals getting blown out by the Bears, McCarron received some snaps in the loss, going 4/8 for 47 yards. It's possible these are McCarron's final snaps with the Bengals, but we'll see how things work out moving forward.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

Multiple reports: The Browns nearly acquired QB A.J. McCarron.

There are multiple outlets reporting that the Bengals and Browns agreed to the deal to send the 27-year-old quarterback to Cleveland; however, the Browns reportedly did not turn the paperwork in by the 4:00 PM ET deadline, despite the trade getting done at 3:55 PM ET, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Reports could be emerging to make the Browns look bad, which seems to be something media members love to do. But if this is true and the Browns just forgot to notify the league office of the trade, it's pretty embarrassing. McCarron will spend the rest of the year with the Bengals, but keep an eye on the situation this offseason.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron plays most of Bengals' fourth preseason game.

McCarron was 20/30 for 216 yards, with three carries for 14 yards, in exhibition against the Colts. Barring terrible play or an injury to Andy Dalton, McCarron might not throw another pass this season; but he's probably hoping he can get somewhere else in 2018 and have an opportunity to start. McCarron will be 27-years-old in a couple weeks.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron throws interception in Bengals' third preseason game.

McCarron was 7/13 for 82 yards with the interception—which went right to the safety after the intended receiver might have been interfered with on the play while running a slant route. The former Alabama quarterback looked fine though, and gave his receivers some opportunities to make plays. Barring an unforeseen trade, McCarron will again be backing up Andy Dalton again this season.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron throws interception in preseason loss to the Chiefs.

McCarron was 8/15 for 93 yards and an interception. The soon-to-be-27-year-old quarterback would probably like more of an opportunity to start somewhere. Perhaps the Jaguars, who are having quarterback issues, will inquire about the two-time national champion at Alabama.

AJ McCarron | Falcons QB

A.J. McCarron looks good in limited action Friday night.

McCarron was 5/8 for 49 yards, showing good accuracy and command of the offense. The backup quarterback wants to be a starter, but a trade seems highly unlikely to come this month, especially after Broncos GM John Elway called a report they wanted him "fake news!" Andy Dalton made a bad mistake with an interception at the goal line last night, but Cincinnati would probably have to get to an awful start for McCarron to see the field in the regular season.

Bengals Director of Player Personnel, Duke Tobin, says at the Combine that the Bengals are not actively looking to trade quarterback A.J. McCarron.

It sounds like Tobin will not trade McCarron unless they are blown away with an offer. Of course, it could be posturing to get great offers for McCarron. Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly not likely to be traded, so McCarron could be a top option for teams looking for a young quarterback with some experience as a backup.
