Baker Mayfield has requested a trade, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Pelissero says that "the bridge is burned" following Cleveland's pursuit of Deshaun Watson, and Mayfield's agent recently contacted the team to communicate the request. Many will joke about the situation at Mayfield's expense, but it's certainly understandable to want out if your team publicly goes after another quarterback. The Browns—who say they will not accommodate the trade request—will now have to look for a new franchise quarterback assuming Mayfield holds firm, and the former No. 1 overall pick is said to be interested in the Colts and Seahawks as possible destinations. We'd expect a move comes at some point before the draft so both Mayfield and the team can move forward.
Baker Mayfield will not play in Week 18.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski just announced the news. This is not a surprise, as Mayfield has been banged up for most of this season and needs surgery on his left shoulder, so he'll sit out the regular season finale and get the procedure as soon as possible with an eye toward next season. A year after a breakout playoff season for Cleveland, Mayfield's disappointing 2021 campaign ends with 3,010 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 14 games. There's a feeling that the Browns might attempt to go in another direction at quarterback this offseason, and it'll be interesting to see what happens with the former No. 1 overall pick.
Baker Mayfield has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Case Keenum has also been removed from the list at quarterback. Activation probably took longer than the team would have hoped, but they'll now have Mayfield back under center tomorrow versus Green Bay. We would expect Cleveland to have a very run-heavy game plan centered around Nick Chubb.
Baker Mayfield has tested positive for COVID-19.
The Browns have been hit extremely hard by COVID, with Mayfield and head coach Kevin Stefanski both joining a long list of players/staff over the past few days. Mayfield now needs two negative tests 24 hours apart to get cleared for Saturday against the Raiders, which might be a challenge considering it's already Wednesday. There are no indications the Week 15 game will be postponed.
Baker Mayfield (shoulder) is cleared to play and expected to start in Week 8, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Mayfield is dealing with significant injuries to his non-throwing shoulder (torn labrum and fracture), but he has full range of motion and will be back in the lineup for a huge matchup versus Pittsburgh. While there is concern about the accuracy still be impacted, Cleveland could throw more with their starter back, and they'll hope to have Nick Chubb (calf) back, too.
Baker Mayfield (shoulder) will not start in Week 7.
With Mayfield clearly at less than 100% while dealing with a serious left shoulder injury, veteran Case Keenum is getting the start tomorrow night against the Broncos. The short week probably made it tough for Mayfield to be ready to go for Thursday Night Football, and hopefully the time off will help a little bit for when the Browns return to action to face the Steelers in Week 8.
Baker Mayfield has a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says the injury, which was known but not its exact extent, was suffered in the Texans game a few weeks ago. This probably explains why Mayfield has been off on some passes in recent games, as an injured shoulder can certainly have a big effect on throwing the ball, even on the opposite side of the throwing arm. Mayfield hasn't missed any practice time due to the issue and will keep playing through it, but the injury is something to keep an eye one, particularly when he takes hits on game day.
Baker Mayfield (shoulder) is returning to the game.
Mayfield went to the locker room, but he’s back throwing on the sideline and will hopefully be able to go the rest of the way. We could see even more of a run-centric game plan if Mayfield is less than 100%.
Baker Mayfield leaves game with apparent shoulder injury.
Mayfield was injured trying to make a tackle following an interception, and now he's headed to the locker room. Three starting quarterback have already been injured to some extent today, but hopefully Mayfield turns out to be OK after getting checked out.
The Browns have exercised Baker Mayfield's fifth-year option, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter.
This was fully expected for the former No. 1 overall pick, and the team could even end up getting an extension done this offseason if they believe the cost will be lower than it might be a year from now. Through three seasons, Mayfield has gone 23-22 with 11,115 passing yards and a 75:43 touchdown-interception ratio; they will be hoping for a leap in 2021 as he enters the second year in Kevin Stefanski's offense.
Baker Mayfield has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
This was expected to happen early this week, and Mayfield will now have a full week of practice to prepare for a potential shootout against the Texans. Cleveland should get Nick Chubb (knee) back on Sunday to further boost the offense.
The Browns have placed Baker Mayfield on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Cleveland is currently on the bye, but Mayfield will now be on the clock to get cleared for Week 10 against the Texans. The third-year quarterback has a chance to be back in the building by Wednesday.
Baker Mayfield plans to be slimmer this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says Mayfield bulked up last year, but he's going in the other direction for 2020 to be lighter and quicker on his feet. The former No. 1 overall pick did not have a very good year in 2019 (22 passing touchdowns and 21 interceptions) after a strong rookie campaign, so it's good that he's identified something that he can improve on heading into an important third season in the NFL.
Baker Mayfield has returned for the Browns.
The Browns did not even give an official injury update for Mayfield, and he did not miss any snaps with his injury. It appears he might have had some extra padding added in the are he had the pain/discomfort, but the bottom line is he's back in there with the Browns down five to the Seahawks.
Baker Mayfield leaves game with apparent injury.
Mayfield is currently headed to the locker room with an unknown ailment, but he was in definite pain and/or discomfort on the series before leaving. The injury appeared to be in his rib or side area. We will update you when more information becomes available.
The Browns have officially hired Freddie Kitchens as their head coach.
Kitchens had a meteoric rise from running backs coach to offensive coordinator to now head coach in a span of just over two months, and he will be tasked with continuing to mold Baker Mayfield into a franchise quarterback. Cleveland’s offense made huge strides when Hue Jackson and Todd Haley were fired, but it’s definitely a gamble to give Kitchens the lead job over Gregg Williams (5-3 as interim coach), as he will be overseeing an entire operation rather than just Mayfield and the offense. Still, the franchise must have bought into the vision of their new head coach, and from a fantasy perspective, continuity should be good for Baker and the rest of the offense. Kitchens turned 44 in November.
Baker Mayfield, Browns lose a heartbreaker to the Ravens, 26-24.
Mayfield was 23/42 for 376 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions in the loss. All three interceptions were on the rookie—including the game-ending turnover in Baltimore territory on fourth down—and he seemed to be a bit off throughout the game despite nearly 400 yards. Overall this season, Mayfield completed 63.8% of his passes for 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns (a new rookie record), and 14 interceptions. There is certainly plenty to get excited about from both a real-life and fantasy perspective, but the next head coach will obviously be a big factor in Mayfield's development. For now, he can be considered a popular mid-to-late-round option at quarterback next summer.
Baker Mayfield, Browns improve to 7-7-1 with win over the Bengals.
Mayfield was 27/37 for 284 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, also adding six carries for 16 yards. The scores all came in the red zone, first to David Njoku on a jump ball from three yards away, then to Darren Fells on a well-placed throw along the boundary on a scramble from one yard away, and finally to Rashard Higgins on a 17-yard catch-and-run. He also added a 66-yard pass to Njoku that sealed the game for good measure. Mayfield was consistent with his accuracy all afternoon, and Cleveland is now 5-2 under interim head coach Gregg Williams, who will have a real chance to get the team over .500 next week in Baltimore. The Browns will certainly be determined as they look to play spoiler, but consider Baker a low-end QB2 for a tough matchup.
Baker Mayfield, Browns keep season alive with huge win in Denver, 17-16.
Mayfield was 18/31 for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, also adding four carries for six yards and a lost fumble. The team's opening offensive possession ended with a dime to Breshad Perriman from 31 yards away, but the No. 1 overall pick struggled a bit the rest of the way. Still, a go-ahead touchdown to Antonio Callaway from two yards out was enough to give Cleveland their fourth win in five games, and they have a real shot at the postseason if they can win out and get some help. Back at home next week, Mayfield will be a strong streaming option against a Bengals defense he shredded for four touchdowns last month.
Baker Mayfield, Browns keep slim playoff hopes alive with 26-20 victory over the Panthers.
Mayfield was 18/22 for 238 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions, also adding four carries for two yards. The numbers weren't flashy, but Baker dropped a couple dimes—including a 51-yard touchdown to Jarvis Landry in double coverage—and took care of the ball in a close win. He also displayed his overlooked arm strength with a 66-yard bomb to Breshad Perriman on the team's opening possession, which set up a Landry rushing score. Fans will get to see Mayfield in action against the Broncos next Saturday night in what looks like an elimination game, but the game being in Denver leaves him as a low-end QB2 option.
Baker Mayfield struggles as the Browns lose in Houston, 29-13.
Mayfield was 29/43 for 397 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions, which came on back-to-back-to-back drives in the second quarter and led to a 23-0 halftime deficit. Baker simply wasn't seeing the field well in the loss, which was a disappointment considering the Browns had a chance to really climb into playoff contention. The No. 1 overall pick will look to bounce back a finish strong in the fantasy playoffs. Cleveland will host Carolina in Week 14.
Baker Mayfield throws four touchdowns in Browns' win.
Mayfield was 19.26 for 258 yards and four touchdowns against the Bengals, as he made good decisions and was very accurate throughout the game. Mayfield hit eight different receivers in the Week 12 victory, connecting with four different guys (Antonio Callaway, Darren Fells, Nick Chubb, and David Njoku) for his four scores. This first-career four-touchdown performance comes after his first-career three-touchdown performance last game, and it extends Mayfield's streak of games with multiple touchdown passes to five. The No. 1 pick in the draft has had good matchups as of late, and he's looked very good. Things will get tougher next week against the Texans, though.
Baker Mayfield plays efficient football as the Browns upset the Falcons, 28-16.
Mayfield was 17/20 for 216 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, also adding six carries for 20 yards. It was an impressive showing by Mayfield, as he took what the defense gave him and spread the ball around with Cleveland playing with the lead throughout the afternoon. The first touchdown came on a scramble right to Rashard Higgins from 28 yards away, and then he connected with his running backs Nick Chubb (13 yards) and Duke Johnson (11 yards) in the red zone. New offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens did a great job calling a balanced game (20 carries for Chubb), and that should continue after the Week 11 bye. Mayfield should be a solid streaming option the rest of the way.
Baker Mayfield throws two touchdowns in loss to the Chiefs.
Mayfield was 29/42 for 297 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Week 9 loss. Both touchdowns were to running back Duke Johnson Jr., but overall it was difficult to keep up with Kansas City's offense. The interception was late in the game when he forced the ball while outside the pocket. Mayfield left briefly after taking a bit hit to the chest area, but thankfully he's probably fine. The No. 1 pick next faces a banged-up Falcons defense in another potential shootout, so he's in the QB1 conversation for Week 10.
Baker Mayfield has returned to the game.
Mayfield was thankfully quickly cleared, and the rookie quarterback will be back in the game to start the fourth quarter for Cleveland. He's attempting to lead a 19-point comeback against the Chiefs.
Baker Mayfield leaves game after big hit.
Mayfield took a big hit on a late-third-quarter sack against the Chiefs, and he's now in the medical tent. It appeared to be an injury to the chest area, but we'll update you as more information becomes available on the rookie quarterback.
Baker Mayfield throws two touchdowns in Browns' loss.
Mayfield was 22/36 for 180 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception along with one carry for nine yards against the Steelers, as the Browns drop to 2-5-1 on the season. The touchdowns were to Antonio Callaway (on a nicely-placed pass lofted deep in the red zone) and Seth DeValve (on a 24-yard pass with the game basically over). Next week, it'll be interesting to see Mayfield face Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, as Mayfield and Mahomes combined for 14 total touchdowns when Oklahoma topped Texas Tech back in 2016. And with the way Mayfield carries a chip on his shoulder, you can bet he'll be amped up and determined to try and knock off the quarterback that forced him to leave the Texas Tech program. Mayfield has QB1 upside against the Chiefs for Week 9.
Baker Mayfield, Browns fall to 2-4-1 with overtime loss to the Buccaneers.
Mayfield was 23/34 for 215 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, also adding four carries for 43 yards. Cleveland didn't get going until the second half, but Mayfield was able to find David Njoku for a 15-yard score in the third quarter and then connected with Jarvis Landry from 16 yards away to tie the game at 23-23 in the fourth. The Browns had two possessions in overtime, but went three-and-out on both, including a drive that started at the Tampa Bay 45-yard line and was ended on a sack of Mayfield. Overall, the No. 1 overall pick held the ball too long on more than one occasion, and he looked surprisingly indecisive against a soft defense that was missing a couple players up front. The rushing production helped him from a fantasy perspective, but going on the road to face a rested Pittsburgh team might not be as promising a matchup as it looked a couple days ago. Consider Mayfield a low-end QB1 with the hope that he can figure things out in a potential shootout.
Baker Mayfield throws two interceptions in Browns' loss.
Mayfield and the offense were not sharp against the Chargers, though a twisted ankle on a first-down marker at the sideline could have affected the rookie quarterback's play a bit throughout the game. The No. 1 pick was 22/46 for 238 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions along with two carries and eight yards. The score was on a fade to David Njoku in the fourth quarter. Next week, Mayfield will look to bounce back with an appetizing matchup with the Buccaneers, putting him in the mix as a QB1 option.
Baker Mayfield wins first home start for the Browns.
Mayfield was 25/43 for 342 yards, one touchdown, and one interception along with two carries for 23 yards in the 9-6 overtime victory against the Ravens. The touchdown was to Rashard Higgins, who got wide-open in the end zone for a 19-yard score. Mayfield probably held the ball too long a few times, and he was sacked five times in the game with at least a couple of them coming because he didn't get rid of the ball, but it was a solid game for the No. 1 pick. Mayfield faces the Chargers in Week 6.
Baker Mayfield turns it over four times in first career start as Browns fall to the Raiders in overtime, 45-42.
Mayfield was 21/41 for 295 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, also adding four carries for ten yards and two lost fumbles. Cleveland was able to get a 28-14 lead thanks in part to a 49-yard catch-and-run by Darren Fells and then a two-yard fade to Jarvis Landry for Mayfield's touchdowns, but Oakland caught fire over the final 16 minutes of regulation to tie the game and win in overtime. The No. 1 overall pick displayed an uncanny ability to avoid pressure in the pocket, but he obviously needs to take better care of the football if the Browns are truly going to compete for a playoff spot like many expect. Overall, Mayfield didn't look overwhelmed in his first road start, but he returns home in Week 5 for a tough matchup against the Ravens next Sunday, so it's best to keep him out of lineups. Looking ahead, he gets a cupcake stretch starting in Week 7 with games against Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Atlanta.
The Browns have named Baker Mayfield their starting quarterback.
After Mayfield came in to lead Cleveland to their first win since December of 2016 on Thursday night, head coach Hue Jackson said he would need to look at the film before making a decision on his starter. However, that was clearly just coach speak with Tyrod Taylor in the concussion protocol, and he told the team this morning that Mayfield is the new starting quarterback. The No. 1 overall pick showed impressive accuracy to all levels on the field in his NFL debut, but it'll be interesting to see how he performs against the Raiders for his first start now that teams know he will be under center. He is at least worth considering as a streaming option for fantasy owners on an offense that has a strong supporting cast.
Baker Mayfield leads Browns in second half to snap 19-game losing streak with 21-17 victory over the Jets.
Making his NFL debut at the end of the second quarter in relief of Tyrod Taylor (concussion), Mayfield went 17/23 for 201 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. The No. 1 overall pick also caught a two-point conversion on Cleveland's version of the "Philly Special" in a comeback win. It was just a different feel when Mayfield, who also had his receivers drop at least three drops that would have padded his stats even more, came into the game, as he plays with a ton of confidence and is willing to rip throws that Tyrod Taylor simply wouldn't. Overall, the Oklahoma product had an excellent debut, and the game showed that Cleveland made a mistake not starting him to begin with. He did have one or two misplaced balls and made an ill-advised throw in the red zone that should have been picked, but some growing pains are to be expected. Mayfield is immediately on the streaming radar for Week 4 against the Raiders, but he isn't a must-own in redraft leagues at such a deep position.
The Browns have selected Baker Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The man that Browns consultant Scot McCloughan has compared to Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre has been made the top pick in the draft by Cleveland. For most of the draft process, the consensus was that USC quarterback Sam Darnold would be the selection; then there was a time when Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen looked like he might be the guy. But it's the reigning Heisman Trophy winner that Cleveland expects to bring their franchise long-needed stability to the game's most important position. After the Browns traded for former Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, it gave a hint they might prefer the shorter Mayfield to the other quarterbacks in this year's draft. The Browns have already said Tyrod Taylor will be the team's starter this season, but it would not be surprising if Mayfield pushed him for the starting job for Week 1.
