The Patriots re-signed Brian Hoyer.
Hoyer is an experienced backup and a good presence for young franchise quarterback Mac Jones, so this re-signing is not surprising. The veteran Hoyer should help with the Patriots offense transitioning without offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
The Patriots released Brian Hoyer.
This looks like just a roster restructuring decision by the Patriots, as Hoyer is expected to be brought back as the backup quarterback behind new starter Mac Jones to open the regular season.
The Patriots are signing Brian Hoyer, according to The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.
New England is bringing back a veteran quarterback they are obviously very comfortable and familiar with, and Hoyer will likely be a good presence for rookie first-rounder Mac Jones to lean on at least through the summer.
The Patriots are signing Brian Hoyer, according to The Boston Globe's Jim McBride.
It felt like this was going to happen after Hoyer was released by the Colts yesterday, and it'll be the veteran quarterback's third stint with the Patriots. Jarrett Stidham is the early favorite to start at quarterback for New England in 2020, but Hoyer brings a steady hand that will be a good presence for Stidham to lean on.
The Colts are releasing Brian Hoyer, according to Ian Rapoport.
It didn't make sense for Indianapolis to keep a high-level backup like Hoyer as a third-stringer behind Philip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett, so this move makes sense for both sides. New England would be a logical landing spot for the veteran quarterback, as Tom Brady's successor is perhaps the biggest question mark in the league right now.
Brian Hoyer is signing with the Colts, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says it's a three-year, $12 million deal for Hoyer. The former Patriots backup has started 37 games in the NFL (for the Cardinals, Browns, Texans, Bears, and 49ers), and he'll provide plenty of experience behind new Colts starter Jacoby Brissett.
The Patriots released Brian Hoyer, according to multiple reports.
Fourth-round rookie quarterback Jarrett Stidham looked excellent this preseason, and he'll back up Tom Brady. Meanwhile, Hoyer should draw interest around the league as an experienced backup, and it's possible he makes his way back to New England if they carry three quarterbacks at one point.
Brian Hoyer sees action in the fourth quarter of blowout loss to the Titans.
Hoyer completed his only pass for seven yards and added a two-yard rush. The Patriots will hope their No. 2 quarterback only sees the field in blowouts for them down the stretch.
Brian Hoyer enters late in Patriots' win.
Hoyer got in the game in his first game back in New England after being released by the 49ers after the trade of Jimmy Garoppolo. He went 3/3 for 37 yards, hitting fullback James Develin in the flat for a short pass and throwing a couple of screens to Brandin Cooks, including one that went for 27 yards. Hoyer looked comfortable in his limited action out there and there's a reason the Patriots wanted him back, but hopefully he only has to get in the game because of blowouts like this.
The Patriots are signing quarterback Brian Hoyer.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, it's a three-year deal for the veteran quarterback. After New England's trade of Jimmy Garoppolo to the Niners, this was expected to come together quickly and it did. Hoyer is a good teammate and someone that's familiar with how things are done in New England, so it was an ideal match.
The 49ers released quarterback Brian Hoyer.
With the trade of Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco, New England seems like the perfect landing spot for the veteran quarterback. Hoyer spent his first three seasons with the Patriots, so we'll see if he heads back there soon to take the currently-vacant backup quarterback spot behind Tom Brady.
Brian Hoyer gets benched against the Redskins
The offense wasn't doing much and Kyle Shanahan opted to make the switch to rookie C.J. Beathard. Before leaving, Hoyer was 4/11 for 34 yards. This could be the last we see of Hoyer this season, but he'll handle the benching like a true pro and support the rookie third-rounder.
Brian Hoyer plays well, but 49ers drop to 0-5.
Hoyer was 29/46 for 353 yards and two touchdowns versus the Colts. The first score was a slant route to rookie tight end George Kittle, and the second was on a shuffle pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk. The veteran quarterback has a pretty good matchup against a Redskins team that will be without top cornerback Josh Norman in Week 6, but you can probably find better quarterback options in your starting lineup in standard 10- or 12-team leagues.
Brian Hoyer was 24/49 for 234 yards and one interception in Sunday's overtime loss to the Cardinals.
Hoyer struggled for the third time in four weeks, and he's now on pace for 3,432 yards, eight touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Outside of Week 3's primetime shootout with the Rams, it hasn't been good for San Francisco's offense in 2017. They have a chance to pickup their first win of the season next Sunday against the Colts, but Indy will likely be favored at home. Hoyer isn't a fantasy option.
Brian Hoyer overcomes interception on first play of the game in Week 3.
Things couldn't have started off much worse for Hoyer in the Thursday Night Football game against the Rams, as he threw an ill-advised pass on an out route that was blanketed and intercepted, which led to a Rams score on the next play. After that, Hoyer was locked in, throwing precise passes all over the field, particularly on short-intermediate passes that were right on the money. For the game, Hoyer was 23/27 for 332 yards, two touchdown, one interception and a nine-yard rushing touchdown. Hoyer and the 49ers face Arizona in Week 4, so it'd probably be a surprise if he was able to put up these kind of numbers in that game.
Brian Hoyer and Niners struggle in Week 2 against Seattle.
The game was at Seattle, who very much shut down the passing attack of the 49ers. Hoyer was 15/27 for only 99 yards and a n interception. The San Francisco offense has not looked great through two games, but they'll likely have an easier time through the air on Thursday night against the Rams.
Niners struggle in Week 1 against the Panthers.
After a great third week of the preseason, the offense could not have looked much different to open the regular season. Carolina didn't make things easy, though, as they were flying around the field. Brian Hoyer was 24/35 for 193 yards, an interception, and a lost fumble. The INT was on a throw over the middle where he just didn't see Luke Kuechly dropping in coverage. Things probably won't get much easier next week against Seattle.
Brian Hoyer and the 49ers score two touchdowns against the Vikings in exhibition.
Hoyer was 12/17 for 176 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 3 preseason game. Kyle Shanahan was dialing things up and the Niners were clicking. They scored on the opening drive, as Hoyer threw a 45-yard touchdown to a wide-open Marquise Goodwin. The second touchdown was on an angle route to Carlos Hyde for 24 yards. It was a very good performance against a potentially elite defense, so this is a big positive. Don't be surprised if Hoyer, who is getting drafted in virtually no leagues, provides some QB1 weeks in 2017.
Brian Hoyer was 8/11 for 89 yards and one interception against Denver on Saturday night.
It was a tough spot against the Broncos, but Hoyer couldn't put any points on the board for San Francisco. The veteran quarterback doesn't have that much of an easier matchup next week against Minnesota in the regular season dress rehearsal.
Brian Hoyer goes 1/4 for three yards in preseason debut for the Niners.
Kyle Shanahan's starter did make a solid throw on a third down, but it was overturned because of a penalty. Hoyer and the starters should get more action in the second preseason game next Saturday in a tough test versus Denver.
On Sirius XM NFL, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he sees Brian Hoyer as the team's starting quarterback.
Shanahan also said "we will see if we can improve in the draft." The Niners have the second pick in the draft, but they are not expected to take a quarterback there. They may target someone at the top of round two, but Hoyer is likely to open the season as the Niners' starter. He probably won't be a great fantasy option.
The 49ers officially signed quarterback Brian Hoyer.
Hoyer will at least compete for the starting job, and is the favorite at the moment. He won't be a good fantasy option, but he should steady the ship for the 49ers. He's a plus for Pierre Garçon—he'll be able to get him the ball.
Aditi Kinkhabwala reports that someone "very close" to Kyle Shanahan says the signing of Brian Hoyer does not mean they won't be looking for a "frontline" quarterback.
Kinkhabwala says the Kirk Cousins trade talk is "not dead." Hoyer will be the only quarterback on the roster (so, they needed a backup as well as a starter) when the 49ers sign him tomorrow. Shanahan still likes Kirk Cousins, so we'll see if they get something done. Otherwise, the 49ers will probably draft someone at some point in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Brian Hoyer will sign with the 49ers tomorrow, according to multiple reports.
Hoyer reportedly also had interest from the Jets. New head coach Kyle Shanahan coached Hoyer in Cleveland, so there's a relationship there. Hoyer could start for the 49ers next season in front of a rookie quarterback.
"Multiple team" will inquire about Brian Hoyer, according to CSN Chicago.
CSN Chicago reports that there seems to be no interest in a new contract between Hoyer and the Bears. Hoyer could be a nice option for a team that drafts a rookie quarterback and wants someone to play until the rookie is ready.
