Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

The Buccaneers are signing Darren Fells.

Fells will start on the practice squad for Tampa Bay, but he’s expected to be brought up to the active roster as early as Sunday, which indicates Rob Gronkowski (back) might not be ready for Week 10. Fells goes from the winless Lions to the defending champion Bucs.

The Lions are releasing Darren Fells.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Fells asked for his release and that it's been granted. The veteran tight end presumably wanted to play for a team with a better shot of contending. He'll now hit waivers.

The Lions are signing Darren Fells.

Fells spent 2017 with the Lions, and he's back under the new regime as very strong depth behind third-year pro T.J. Hockenson. The veteran tight end has played as well as ever over his past two seasons in Houston, catching 11 touchdowns in that span. Fells will look to emerge as a key red-zone target for Jared Goff in Detroit.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

The Texans are releasing Darren Fells, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fells is a big target that caught 11 touchdowns over the past two seasons, and he is also one of the game's best run-blocking tight ends, so he shouldn't have trouble finding a new home despite turning 35 next month. Houston has plenty of young options at the position that they will count on in 2021.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells has agreed to a two-year extension with the Texans, according to Ian Rapoport.

The veteran scored seven touchdowns for Houston last year, so this is a smart move to get him back despite all the young tight ends on the roster. Aside from what he brings to the passing game as a red-zone threat at six-foot-seven, Fells is a standout blocker. The contract will reportedly pay him $7 million over the next two years.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

The Texans are signing Darren Fells, according to Mike Garafolo.

Fells was recently released by the Browns, but unsurprisingly, it didn't take him long to find a new home. In Houston, he will provide a boost as a blocker to aid a sub-par offensive line, and the veteran also has the size to be a threat in the red zone. The biggest fantasy impact here is that Fells will ding the stock of the Texans' 2018 draft class (third-rounder Jordan Akins and sixth-rounder Jordan Thomas).

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

The Browns have released Darren Fells, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Cleveland was trying to trade the veteran tight end, but there were apparently no takers, and now he'll hit free agency. Fells is a solid blocker that can chip in as a receiver, and he's also a good locker room guy. He'll draw plenty of interest on the open market.

Darren Fells catches one pass in season finale.

It went for three yards. Fells ends his age-32 season with 11 receptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns; the Browns can get out of his contract with minimal cap implications, but it makes sense to keep the veteran around for a young team.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells scores in win over the Bengals.

Fells caught three passes for 18 yards, including a one-yard touchdown catch on a broken play. The veteran will continue seeing snaps as a standout blocker, but he isn't a recommended fantasy option behind David Njoku.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells scores in Browns' win.

Fells caught a six-yard touchdown on his lone target of the game against the Bengals. He got wide open in the back of the end zone on a Baker Mayfield scramble. The veteran tight end is a good real-life presence and contributor for the Browns, but he's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches one pass against the Steelers.

Fells' lone reception in the Browns' Week 8 loss went for six yards. The veteran tight end is a great real-life asset for the Browns, but he's not on the fantasy radar right now.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches one pass against the Ravens.

Fells was targeted once in the Week 5 win, gaining eight yards on his lone reception. The veteran tight end is a very good real-life asset for the Browns, but he's not a fantasy option.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches 49-yard touchdown in Week 4 overtime loss.

It was his only reception of the game on an easy catch and run that ended with a "Fusion" celebration from Dragon Ball Z with fellow tight end David Njoku. Fells should continue to make some plays when given the opportunity, but he is a better veteran presence and blocker than fantasy option.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches both Week 2 targets.

Fells gained 15 yards on his two receptions in a Browns loss. He's a solid real-life contributor but not a reliable fantasy option.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches 12-yard pass in Week 1 tie.

It was his only reception of the game. Fells isn't a fantasy option as Cleveland's main blocking tight end.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

The Browns are signing tight end Darren Fells, according to NFL Network.

Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport say it's a three-year deal worth $12 million, and of course it cannot become official until the start of the new league year today at 4:00 PM ET. Fells will give an instant run-blocking presence to the Browns, and he's also shown his capability as a solid scoring threat at 6'7". Second-year tight end David Njoku is likely to be the fantasy asset at the position for the Browns, though.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches one pass in Week 17.

Fells gained 12 yards on his lone reception against Green Bay. He had 17 receptions for 177 yards and three touchdowns this season, and it's possible he has a bigger role in 2018 after Matthew Stafford showed a nice connection with him at certain times in the season.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches 23-yard pass in win over the Bucs.

It was his only reception of the game. Fells isn't a fantasy option with Eric Ebron doing a better job catching the ball in recent weeks.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches two passes for 10 yards in Week 13 loss.

The veteran tight end will make some plays, but he isn't a reliable fantasy option heading into a matchup with the Bucs.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells doesn't catch a pass in Week 12.

Fells was targeted three times against the Vikings, not catching any. It initially looked like Fells had a touchdown, but the ball hit the ground and the play was overturned. Like teammate Eric Ebron, Fells' role isn't big enough to be a recommended fantasy option right now.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches one pass in Week 7.

Fells started at tight end for the Lions, but he was targeted only one time in the game, gaining ten yards after breaking a tackle on a pass to the flat. Fells is not a reliable fantasy option right now, as he's more of a real-life contributor for the Lions.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells catches one pass in loss to the Steelers.

It went for 12 yards. Unless Eric Ebron is traded before Tuesday's deadline, Fells isn't a fantasy option. The Lions play the Packers next week on Monday Night Football.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells scores again in Week 6.

Fells caught two of four targets for 26 yards and a touchdown versus the Saints, making it three touchdowns in two games for Fells. He appears to have overtaken Eric Ebron as the primary tight end for the Lions, but you're looking for a touchdown if you put Fells into your fantasy lineup—so there's obvious risk.

Darren Fells | Free Agent TE

Darren Fells scores twice in Lions' comeback attempt.

Fells caught two passes for 24 yards, both scores in the fourth quarter. The big tight end has actually played better than Eric Ebron in each of the past two games, but he isn't a fantasy option.
