WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (knee) is expected to miss four-to-five months.

The recovery timeline for Smith wasn't going to be known until after surgery, and unfortunately it'll be a meniscus tear that keeps him out for a few months instead of potentially a few weeks. Perhaps Smith will be able to return very late in the season or into the playoffs, but he's now off the redraft radar. It's a very tough break for an emerging player, and we wish him luck on his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the field.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. is undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero says the exact timetable is to be determined, but obviously he'll be out for Week 1. This is tough to hear for a young player that was looking to have a breakout season as the clear No. 1 tight end for the Vikings, but hopefully he doesn't miss too much of the season. The potential return date for Smith should be known after surgery.

Irv Smith Jr. (back) is officially active for Week 14.

Smith is expected to be limited in his return to the lineup, so he’s difficult to trust in the first week of the fantasy playoffs. Still, his presence will be a boost for the Vikings in real life with Kyle Rudolph (foot) now out at tight end.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (back) is officially listed as questionable for Week 14.

With Kyle Rudolph (foot) listed as doubtful, the Vikings would really benefit if Smith is able to get into the lineup on Sunday. That said, even if Smith is active, he will be difficult to trust in the first week of the fantasy lineups at less than 100%.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (back) will not play in Week 13.

Being ruled out ahead of the weekend isn't a great sign, and Smith could be dealing with a multi-week back issue. Kyle Rudolph will be the clear top tight end for Minnesota this Sunday versus Jacksonville.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (groin) is officially active for the Vikings.

Smith missed just one game with his groin issue, and he’ll suit up for today’s Week 11 game versus the Cowboys. Th second-year tight end is in the TE2 mix.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (groin) is officially questionable for Week 11.

Smith was able to practice on a limited basis this week and has a shot for Sunday against the Cowboys. However, it might be difficult to trust him in fantasy lineups if he does suit up this weekend.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

Irv Smith Jr. (groin) has officially been ruled out for Monday night.

Smith Jr. did not practice all week while dealing with his groin injury, so that paired with him being ruled out two days ahead of Monday night indicates that he's facing a multi-week absence. Kyle Rudolph could be in line for more targets with Smith out for Week 10.

Irv Smith Jr. | Vikings TE

The Vikings have selected Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. with the No. 50 pick (second round) in the 2019 NFL Draft.

You can read out full scouting report on Smith Jr. in the link below, but he’s the son of former first-round pick Irv Smith Sr., and he’s a reliable target that could have a bigger role in the NFL than he did with the Crimson Tide. Smith is more of an on-the-ground target that won’t dominate with elite speed or leaping ability, but he should be a reliable option for Kirk Cousins. As is usual the case with tight ends, Smith has more dynasty league value than he does re-draft value for his rookie season; but we'll see what happens with incumbent Vikings starter Kyle Rudolph. It's possible Smith delivers Year 1 value if he's the team's top option at tight end.
