WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

The Cardinals signed Ito Smith.

The former Falcons running back lands in a good spot with a shot to win a roster spot in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. Given the state of the Arizona backfield, Smith will almost certainly have to force his way into the Cardinals keeping four running backs on the 53-man roster to make the team.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith has been released.

Smith had flashed over the past three seasons with Atlanta, but the team could potentially have a whole new backfield in 2021. Not turning 26 until the fall, Smith shouldn't have trouble getting a shot elsewhere this summer, though redraft value is unlikely at this point. Even after signing Mike Davis (and Cordarrelle Patterson), the Falcons could be a team that drafts a running back early later this month.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

The Falcons placed Ito Smith on injured reserve.

Smith has been dealing with a neck injury that caused him to be carted off the field last month, and his season is now over. The second-year back totaled 22 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown on the ground with 11 receptions for 87 yards through the air in 2019, and he should be back next season for what could be a remade Atlanta backfield. Brian Hill and Qadree Ollison should both get opportunities behind Devonta Freeman over the final eight games.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith (concussion) will not play in Week 8.

The Falcons are not taking any chances with Smith after he was carted off with head and neck injuries in yesterday's loss to the Rams. Smith remains in concussion protocol and should be considered week-to-week. Smith's absence could lead to more work for starter Devonta Freeman.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith gets carted off against the Rams.

Smith was trying to protector the passer, and he unfortunately appeared to take a hit to the head and was carted off the field. The good news is Smith was moving around before he went on the cart, but his day is almost certainly done. Before leaving, Smith has one carry for seven yards.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith has cleared concussion protocol.

Smith is good to go for this Sunday against the Titans, and he'll continue mixing in behind starter Devonta Freeman in Atlanta's backfield. Smith has played well this season, but he's just a handcuff for now.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith (concussion) was officially limited in today's practice.

Smith is making progress through concussion protocol, and there looks to be a pretty good chance he can play this Sunday. We'll see if he can clear the protocol and avoid an injury designation heading into Week 4 when the final injury report of the week is released tomorrow.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith (concussion) did not return for the Falcons.

Smith his now in concussion protocol and will have a week to get cleared for next Sunday's game against the Titans. Smith had one carry for no yards before leaving today's game.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith is being evaluated for a possible concussion.

Smith is officially questionable to return for the Falcons. He looked a little wobbly going to the sideline, which isn't a good sign. Hopefully he's feeling OK, but we'll update you when more information becomes available.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

The Falcons placed Ito Smith (knee) on inured reserve.

The 5-9 Falcons have been hit with yet another injury sending a player to injured reserve, and this is their second running back this has happened to after Devonta Freeman was also sent to IR earlier this season. Smith left yesterday's game with a knee injury that he limped off with, and the injury isn't thought to be something that will require surgery. But the rookie running back's season is over, and it ends with 90 carries for 315 yards and four touchdowns along with 27 receptions for 152 yards. The numbers weren't great, but it was a solid first NFL season for the fourth-round pick from Southern Miss. Atlanta's backfield situation is as up in the air as any backfield in the league heading into 2019, as Tevin Coleman is set to become a free agent while Freeman remains under contract at a relatively big number. Smith's 2019 fantasy value is difficult to gauge at this point. For the rest of this season, Coleman could receive a heavier workload with Smith out, but Brian Hill might just take most of Smith's snaps in the final two games of the year.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith handles 11 touches in win over the Cardinals.

Smith rushed nine times for 34 yards and caught two passes for five yards. The rookie back ended up leaving the game with a knee injury, but hopefully it was just precautionary in a blowout win, as he came into the game banged up. Smith is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry this year, but he has eaten into Tevin Coleman's workload since Atlanta fell out of playoff contention, which makes him a FLEX option over the final two weeks.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith (neck/knee) is officially active for Week 15.

There was some concern about Smith’s status after he was limited in Friday’s practice because of a neck injury that popped up on the injury report after he dealt with a knee injury earlier in the week, but he’s ready to go against the Cardinals. Smith has some upside as a FLEX option against a Cardinals team that’s given up the most rushing touchdowns in the league this season.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith (neck/knee) is officially listed as questionable for Week 15.

Smith had been dealing with a neck injury but was a full participant in yesterday's practice, but now he was limited in today's practice because of a knee injury and is officially questionable to play on Sunday. The rookie running back could be headed for a game-time call.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith gets 14 touches against the Packers.

Smith carried 11 times for 60 yards and caught three passes for 14 yards in the Falcons' Week 14 loss. Smith received more touches and carries than Tevin Coleman (ten carries, one reception) in the game, so perhaps the team will get the rookie more work over the final three games to see what they have with Coleman set to become a free agent. Smith gets a good matchup against the Cardinals next week.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith gets eight touches against the Ravens.

Smith carried seven times for 22 yards and caught one pass for no yards in the Falcons' Week 13 loss. The Ravens basically shut down the Falcons offense, and Smith was no different. The rookie running back isn't a recommended fantasy option next week against the Packers.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith gets six touches in Week 12.

Smith carried four times for zero yards and caught two passes for seven yards against the Saints. The rookie running back received a goal-line carry but could not convert, and there wasn't much room to run all night for Atlanta. Tevin Coleman is the clear preferred fantasy option in the Falcons backfield, and Smith is not a must-own at the moment.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith gets eight touches in Week 11.

Smith carried six teams for ten yards and caught two passes for 12 yards against the Cowboys. Tevin Coleman (eight carries, 58 yards, three receptions, 27 yards) was far more effective than the rookie, so it's difficult to trust Smith in Week 12 fantasy lineups on Thanksgiving night. He probably needs a touchdown to deliver FLEX value against the Saints.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith handles eight touches in loss to the Browns.

Smith rushed four times for 11 yards, also adding four receptions for 15 yards. The rookie was bottled up behind Tevin Coleman (14 touches for 63 yards), as Atlanta aired it out 50+ times in a 28-16 defeat. Now 4-5, the Falcons have a huge game in Week 11 against Dallas, but Smith is just a decent FLEX option in a difficult matchup.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith scores against the Redskins.

Smith carried ten times for 60 yards and a touchdown and added one reception for four yards in Atlanta's road win at Washington. Tevin Coleman and Smith paired to gash the Redskins throughout the game, and Smith's score came on a red-zone carry. The rookie running back is on pace for 98 carries, 356 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns, 26 receptions, and 198 receiving yards at the midway point this season.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith handles nine touches in Week 7 victory.

Smith rushed seven times for 16 yards and caught two passes for 29 yards. It was a decent split with Tevin Coleman (13 touches for 82 yards and a score), but the starter made a bigger impact on his opportunities, and it's clear he's the back to own in Atlanta. Smith will be on the FLEX radar when the Falcons return from their Week 8 bye to face the Redskins.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith scores in Falcons' win.

Smith carried 11 times for 22 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for -1 yards in the Week 6 victory against the Buccaneers. The score came on a first-half red zone carry in which the Bucs didn't play good defense, basically allowing a walk-in touchdown. The rookie running back now has a touchdown in three straight games, and the coaching staff clearly trusts giving him a solid amount of work in the backfield. If Devonta Freeman (foot, groin) misses another game, Smith will be in the FLEX conversation for Week 7, particularly in deeper leagues.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith scores in Week 5.

Smith carried three times for five yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for five yards in the loss to the Steelers. The touchdown came by the goal line, as the rookie received the carry over Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Smith has a role in Atlanta's offense, but he's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups as the team's third running back.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith scores first career touchdown in Week 4.

The rookie running back carried seven times for 35 yards and a touchdown along with three reception for 13 yards, as he worked behind Tevin Coleman with Devonta Freeman (knee) still out. The score was a seven-yard carry in which Smith broke a couple of tackles on his way to the end zone. If Freeman is out again in Week 5, Smith could be in line for around another ten touches against the Steelers.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith handles five touches in loss to the Saints.

Smith rushed twice for negative-six yards and caught three passes for 41 yards. New Orleans did a great job containing the ground game for Atlanta, so Smith did well to do some damage through the air for those who took a gamble on him in deeper leagues. The rookie should get a much easier matchup next week against a Bengals team that just allowed 193 rushing yards to Carolina running backs, and he's on the FLEX radar if Devonta Freeman (knee) sits again.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

Ito Smith rushed nine times for 46 yards in Sunday's win over the Panthers.

He also added an eight-yard reception and fumbled once in the red zone, but it didn't result in a turnover. Overall, Smith looked good as a compliment to Tevin Coleman with Devonta Freeman (knee) inactive, and the rookie is on the FLEX radar in deeper leagues for at least the next week or two. He will look to make an impact against the Saints next Sunday.

Ito Smith | Cardinals RB

The Falcons have selected Southern Miss running back Ito Smith with the 126th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Smith is obviously going to be behind Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman on the depth chart, but the small-school back could step in as a change-of-pace option as soon as 2019 if Tevin Coleman hits free agency and goes elsewhere. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes this summer.
