WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Develin missed most of last season with a neck injury, and he is now hanging up his cleats due to "unforeseen complications." After going undrafted in 2010 and spending some time with Cincinnati for parts of three years, New England signed Develin to the practice squad in September of 2012, and he eventually became the starting fullback the following season—a role that allowed him to collect three Super Bowl rings with the Patriots. It is unfortunate that Develin's career is over, but he enjoyed a decade in the league and was a key part of New England teams that relied more heavily on the run in recent years. For his career, Develin finishes with 15 carries, 26 rushing yards, five rushing touchdowns, 31 receptions, and 222 receiving yards. His full retirement post can be read in the link below.

James Develin | Retired FB

The Patriots placed James Develin (neck) on injured reserve.

Develin missed yesterday's game against the Jets with a neck injury, and now he'll miss at least eight weeks on injured reserve. This is a big loss for New England's running game, which has not been clicking through three games. International Pathway player Jakob Johnson, who Bill Belichick praised for his hard work and carving out a spot on the practice squad and now the active roster, will fill in at fullback for the Patriots.

James Develin catches one pass in playoff victory.

It went for nine yards on a short wheel route. Develin also led the way for Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead, each of whom had two touchdowns, and will now lead the way in Super Bowl LIII.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin rushed twice for five yards in Sunday's win over the Chargers.

Develin converted both his touches for a first down, which has been the case whenever called upon this season. New England's fullback will continue leading the way for Sony Michel in the AFC Championship next week.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches one pass in Week 17 win.

It went for two yards. Develin's regular season ends with six carries for eight yards and four touchdowns with 12 catches for 61 yards through the air. New England's fullback will lead the way for Sony Michel next month.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches two passes in Week 15.

Develin gained 18 yards on his two receptions versus Pittsburgh. The Patriots fullback continues to get touches in addition to his work as a lead blocker, but he's obviously difficult to trust in fantasy lineups.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin scores again in Week 14.

Develin took his lone carry against the Dolphins for a two-yard touchdown, his third in the last two games. You're playing with fire by picking up Develin and inserting him into fantasy lineups, but it's good to see him converting his attempts at the goal line.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin scores twice against the Vikings.

Develin punched in a couple of goal-line carries for the Patriots in their Week 13 win, and overall he had four carries for five yards and two touchdowns along with one reception for nine yards. It would be unwise to pick up Develin and expect this to happen every week, but he's a good team player that deserves to find the end zone every once in a while.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin scores in loss to the Titans.

Develin took his only carry of the game for a one-yard touchdown. Shockingly, it was New England's only trip to the end zone, which was a big blow to fantasy owners in a crucial week. The fullback won't be on the fantasy radar after the bye.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches one pass against the Packers.

Develin didn't gain any yardage on his lone Week 9 reception. New England's fullback is not a reliable fantasy option.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches one pass in win over the Bills.

It was a seven-yard reception. The fullback isn't a recommended fantasy option heading into a matchup with the Packers.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches two passes in Week 6.

Develin gained three yards on his two receptions, catching both targets. New England's fullback is not a recommended fantasy option despite his real-life contributions.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches all four targets in Pats' win.

Develin gained 22 yards on his four reception, working as a reliable underneath target for Tom Brady. Develin also lined up as the lone running back next to Brady a couple of times because of his reliability in pass protection. Develin is a solid real-life contributor but is obviously a major risk in fantasy lineups.

James Develin | Retired FB

The Patriots have agreed to terms with fullback James Develin on a two-year contract extension, according to Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport says it's worth $3.8 million and includes a $600,000 signing bonus. Develin doesn't make a big impact in the box score (six receptions for 38 yards in 2017), but he plays a significant role as a lead blocker when New England wants to pound opponents with the running game. And he is versatile enough to split out wide on occasion. Develin, who turns 30 next month, has been with New England since entering the league in 2012 and has the makings of a Patriot for life.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches one pass in Week 14.

Develin gained two yards on his lone reception, as it was a quick pass to the flat. New England's fullback is off the fantasy radar right now.

James Develin | Retired FB

James Develin catches two passes against Denver.

Develin caught a couple of passes in the flat and gained 16 yards. He's always been reliable on those quick outlet passes, and he also contributed as a lead blocker again. Develin is not a fantasy option, despite his real-life contributions to the team.
