Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

The Texans are signing Jaylen Samuels to the practice squad, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Samuels could have a chance to get added to the active roster soon with Mark Ingram now in New Orleans, but it's notable that both David Johnson and Rex Burkhead are very effective pass-catchers out of the backfield. Houston should still remain a committee the rest of the way.

The Steelers released Jaylen Samuels from the practice squad.

Samuels' familiarity with Pittsburgh might help him land back with the team at some point, but they are going in another direction for now. The versatile running back is off the fantasy radar for most leagues at the moment.

The Steelers are signing Jaylen Samuels to the practice squad.

After he was a final cut, Samuels rejoins Pittsburgh as a guy with experience and someone they can count on if he has to be called up from the practice squad this season.

The Steelers released Jaylen Samuels.

Samuels' versatility wasn't enough to secure a spot on the 53-man roster this year after the team drafted Najee Harris in the first round of the draft. Expect Samuels to draw interest around the league, but he's mostly off the fantasy radar for now.

The Steelers have activated Jaylen Samuels from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Samuels has been the No. 4 back for Pittsburgh this year, but it's obviously good to have him healthy. Look for him to mainly contribute on special teams tomorrow against the Bengals.

Jaylen Samuels has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Samuels will need to isolate for the next five days, but he still has time to get cleared by Sunday. Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland Jr. have been the primary backups to James Conner this season.

The Steelers activated Jaylen Samuels off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Samuels can now join the rest of his teammates on the field as training camp ramps up with more activity. The versatile running back will chip in behind starter James Conner this season for Pittsburgh.

The Steelers placed Jaylen Samuels on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Samuels is being placed on the list along with teammate James Washington. If both players have the virus as opposed to just coming in close contact to someone with it, there is a chance they won't catch it during the season, as the unconfirmed thought is that you can only get COVID-19 once.

Jaylen Samuels (groin) was officially a full participant in today's practice.

Samuels didn't practice yesterday, but it was probably a bit of a maintenance day. He appears fine for Sunday night against the Bills, but we'll let you know if he's listed on the Week 15 injury report tomorrow.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels (groin) did not practice on Wednesday.

The Steelers got James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster back at practice, but Samuels missing the start of the week isn't a good sign for his Week 15 status. If the receiving back doesn't play on Sunday night, Conner could return with a monster workload.

Jaylen Samuels catches 13 passes in Week 9

Samuels gained a team-high 73 yards on his 13 catches versus the Colts, setting a single-game team record for receptions by a running back (breaking Le'Veon Bell's record of 12 receptions in 2017). However, Samuels added just eight carries for ten yards on the ground, with Trey Edmunds mixing in and taking a goal-line opportunity (which did not convert), rushing 12 times for 73 yards—including a 45-yard run—overall. Samuels also lost a fumble in the Steelers' win, but he was inserted back into the game. If James Conner (shoulder) remains out moving forward, Samuels clearly has strong fantasy value; but his upside will be slightly capped with Edmunds mixing in more than expected on the ground.

Jaylen Samuels is set to start for the Steelers in Week 9.

With James Conner (shoulder) doubtful and Benny Snell (knee) out, Samuels is set to lead the Steelers backfield this Sunday against the Colts as he returns from the injury that forced him to miss the last couple of games. Samuels apparently could have played last Monday, but the Steelers were playing things safe with him. Pittsburgh's offense typically feeds the ball to their running backs, and Samuels is immediately an excellent fantasy option despite a difficult matchup with Indianapolis. Samuels had touch totals of 18, 21, and 15 in his three starts last season.

Jaylen Samuels (knee) is officially inactive for Monday night.

Samuels was a full participant in practice all week leading up to tonight, but the Steelers are playing it safe with the versatile second-year running back. Benny Snell will handle most of the backfield work when James Conner is out of the game against the Dolphins. Samuels should be back for Week 9.

Jaylen Samuels (knee) is officially listed as questionable for Week 8.

Samuels was a full participant in practice all week, but it looks like the Steelers are going to make sure he feels OK in pregame warmups before declaring him ready to return. Samuels would be in the deep FLEX mix if active, but you'd need to have a backup plan from the Monday night game in case he's inactive.

Jaylen Samuels (knee) was officially a full participant in today's practice.

Samuels says he's taking things day-to-day, but it looks like he should be set to return after getting his knee scoped just a few weeks ago. We'll update you if anything changes, but expect Samuels to mix in behind James Conner against the Dolphins on Monday night. If active, Samuels will have FLEX appeal in deeper leagues in particular.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels will miss a month after arthroscopic knee surgery.

Samuels' knee scope is another blow to a Steelers offense that's dealt with a ton of injuries this season, and it's especially a big blow after Pittsburgh had been using Samuels in a wildcat type of role to help generate offense without Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. Samuels can be dropped from any redraft leagues he was being held in, but he could make for an interesting late-season pickup in a few weeks. James Conner is set for a heavy workload as the Steelers look to compete in a subpar AFC North, but rookie Benny Snell is likely to get more work during Samuels' absence.

Jaylen Samuels handles nine touches in Week 17 win.

Samuels rushed twice for two yards and caught seven passes for 40 yards. The Steelers basically featured James Conner as a runner and played Samuels in obvious passing situations, but it will be interesting to see what they do next year. At best, Samuels—who totaled 455 yards and three touchdowns this season—will probably have a role similar to Sunday.

Jaylen Samuels scores against the Saints.

Samuels carried 12 times for 53 yards along with three receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' Week 16 loss. It was another strong showing for the rookie running back, who remains the clear top option in the backfield without James Conner (ankle). If Conner remains out in Week 17, Samuels would remain an excellent fantasy option in championship lineups when Pittsburgh faces Cincinnati.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels totals 172 yards in Week 15.

Samuels carried 19 times for 142 yards along with two carries for 30 yards in the Steelers' win over the Patriots. From the opening drive, Samuels ran the ball really well, and he showed solid vision, patience, and explosiveness throughout the game. The rookie running back has been taking advantage of his opportunity with James Conner (ankle) out of the lineup, and he probably earned a bigger role even with Conner potentially set to return in Week 16. The Saints are a tough matchup, though, so Samuels will be just a FLEX option if Conner is back after missing the last two games. If Conner remains out, Samuels would be more of an RB2 potentially pushing into RB1 range.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels gets 18 touches in Week 14.

Samuels carried 11 times for 28 yards and caught seven passes (on seven targets) for 64 yards against the Raiders. He worked as the clear top running back with James Conner (ankle) out, but it was the veteran Stevan Ridley that punched in a score on a goal-line carry. Conner probably has a shot to return in Week 15 against the Patriots, but Samuels would remain a solid option for the second week of the fantasy playoffs if Conner is out.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels says he and Stevan Ridley will split time in Week 14.

This was expected, but it's good to get some confirmation that this is how the running backs will be used on Sunday against Oakland. There's always the chance one of the guys separated and ends up getting most of the work, but expect a split backfield for the Steelers during James Conner's absence. Samuels is the preferred fantasy option for the first week of the fantasy playoffs, but keep in mind that Ridley has excelled at the goal-line in his career and could get the carries there.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels handles five touches in Week 13 loss.

Samuels, who operated as the lead back after James Conner (leg) went down, rushed twice for five yards and caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. The rookie is worth picking up in all leagues with Conner likely questionable for Week 14, but the injury doesn't seem to be serious, and there's a chance Pittsburgh's starter doesn't miss any time. If Samuels draws a start against the Raiders next weekend, he will likely be a strong RB1/RB2 option.

Jaylen Samuels catches one pass in Week 12.

Samuels' lone reception against the Broncos went for 12 yards. He was also open for a potential touchdown on a trick play, but Antonio Brown missed him with the deep ball as he was hit. Samuels is not a recommended fantasy option yet.

Jaylen Samuels scores first career touchdown in Steelers' win.

Samuels was second in line behind James Conner in the backfield for the Steelers, carrying five times for seven yards along with three receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown. The score came at the start of the fourth quarter on a screen pass where he leaped into the end zone, and the rookie running back also worked in a two-minute drill that went nowhere at the end of the first half. The Steelers appear to be putting more on Samuels' plate as the season progresses, but he's not a fantasy option yet.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels handles one touch in Week 9 win.

The rookie rushed once for two yards. With James Conner (31 touches) dominating as the clear workhorse, Samuels isn't a recommended fantasy option.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

Jaylen Samuels gets first career touches in Week 8.

The rookie running back carried four times for 17 yards against the Browns. After a Stevan Ridley fumble, Samuels might start getting some touches each week, but he's not a fantasy option right now.

Jaylen Samuels | Free Agent RB

The Steelers have selected NC State running back Jaylen Samuels with the 165th pick (fifth round) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Samuels is a bit of a polarizing prospect because he is considered a “tweeter,” but Pittsburgh has apparently drafted him as a running back. Perhaps they will use him to do some of the things Le’Veon Bell does as a receiver, particularly if the contract situation lingers. Samuels has a chance to make a year-one impact, but it might be more of a real-life than fantasy one. Still, he’s a name to keep an eye on.
