WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

The Colts are signing Nyheim Hines to a three-year, $18.6-million extension.

The deal includes $12 million guaranteed. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Hines has developed into one of the league’s best receiving backs, and he’s the perfect long-term complement to Jonathan Taylor in Indy.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets 15 offensive touches in Week 1.

Hines had seven carries for 28 yards and a touchdown along with eight receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' loss to the Jaguars. It was expected that Philip Rivers would target Hines heavily as a receiver, but Hines' early work as a runner was a surprise. Now, unfortunately Colts starting running back Marlon Mack looks set to miss the season with a torn Achilles, so Hines is more likely to have a steady role on the round moving forward this season while working in complement with second-round rookie Jonathan Taylor. If available, Hines will be one of the strongest waiver wire adds ahead of Week 2.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines rushed three times for 24 yards in Saturday's loss to the Chiefs.

Hines surprisingly wasn't targeted, and the Colts probably could have used him more as a weapon out of the backfield with the receivers struggling. Overall this season, the rookie fourth-round pick flashed enough to have a similar role in 2019 as a pass-catching compliment to Marlon Mack, which should lead to value in PPR leagues.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets four touches against the Titans.

Hines carried one time for four yards and caught three passes for 25 yards in the Colts' Week 17 win. On the season, Hines had 85 carries for 314 yards and two touchdowns and 63 receptions for 425 yards and two touchdowns, but the rookie running back gets to keep playing with Indy headed to the postseason. Hines caught two touchdowns against the Texans in their first matchup of the season, so he's someone to watch this Saturday in the Wild Card Round.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines finds the end zone in win over the Giants.

Hines rushed twice for two yards, including a one-yard touchdown. He also caught four passes for 41 yards. The Colts will need both he and Marlon Mack next week in a de factor playoff game next week in Tennessee, but Mack obviously will be the top play as a strong RB2, with Hines as just a PPR FLEX option.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets ten touches in Week 15.

Hines carried six times for 19 yards and added four receptions for 45 yards against the Cowboys. The explosive rookie running back is a deeper-league PPR FLEX option as a change-of-pace back for Indy.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines handles six touches in Week 14 win.

Hines rushed three times for one yard and caught three passes (on five targets) for 16 yards. The rookie has struggled as a runner since the starter of November with just 24 carries for 51 yards, so he isn't a strong option in fantasy lineups down the stretch. The Colts will take on the Cowboys next week.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines catches nine passes in Week 13.

Hines gained 50 yards on his nine receptions (nine targets) against the Jaguars, and he also had four carries for five yards. This tied Hines for his highest reception total this season, and his first game with nine receptions came back in Week 4 against his next opponent, the Texans. Hines had nine receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns against the min his first matchup.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines handles 11 touches in win over the Dolphins.

Hines rushed nine times for 28 yards, also adding two receptions for 22 yards. The dynamic rookie again showed his ability to make people miss in space, but hopefully Marlon Mack (concussion) is able to get cleared for next week's matchup against the Jaguars. If not, Hines will be on the FLEX radar in all formats.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets six touches in Week 11.

Hines carried five times for 14 yards and caught one pass (on three targets) for 20 yards in the Colts' win over the Titans. Hines did fumble in the game, but it went out of bounds. The rookie running back isn't a highly-recommended fantasy option right now, but next week against the Dolphins is an excellent matchup.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets six touches in Week 10.

Hines carried three times for three yards and added three receptions for 19 yards against the Jaguars. The dynamic rookie running back is more of just a deep-league PPR option for fantasy purpose right now.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines impresses on 13 touches as Colts defeat the Raiders.

Hines rushed 11 times for 78 yards, also adding two receptions for seven yards. The rookie was overshadowed by Marlon Mack (25 carries for 132 yards and two scores), but he was great in his own right with 7.1 yards per carry. At the season's midway point, Hines is on pace for 850 total yards and six total touchdowns, and he's been great considering some people ignorantly wrote him off based on preseason struggles. The fourth-round pick is worth holding onto in PPR leagues heading into Indy's bye.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets six touches against the Bills.

Hines carried five times for 47 yards and added one reception for -5 yards in the Week 7 win. Marlon Mack (21 touches, 159 yards, two touchdowns) is the clear top back for the Colts right now, so Hines is more of a deep-league PPR FLEX at the moment.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets five touches in Week 6.

Hines carried three times for 14 yards and caught two passes for 21 yards against the Jets. After working as a near-workhorse in Week 5, the rookie running back took a backseat to Marlon Mack in Mack's return from a hamstring injury. Hines is just a volatile FLEX option in PPR leagues next week against the Bills.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines leads Colts backfield in Week 5.

With Marlon Mack (hamstring) out again, Hines started the game and led the team's backfield with 15 carries for 45 yards and seven receptions for 45 yards. Hines also seemed to take blame on the sideline for Andrew Luck's first interception, as he apparently wasn't ready for a pass coming his way after Luck was pressured. Jordan Wilkins just mixed in behind Hines, receiving eight touches. If Mack remains out, Hines will be a starting option in Week 6 fantasy lineups, but he'll be a PPR option regardless of Mack's status.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines scores twice in Colts' overtime loss.

The dynamic rookie running back helped the Colts get back in the game, and he had the late fourth-quarter touchdown to put the team within a two-point conversion of sending the game to overtime. Hines had four carries for ten yards and nine receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 4 loss. Through four games, Hines has been a huge asset for Andrew Luck out of the backfield and is on pace for 72 carries for 216 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns along with 88 receptions for 476 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. The yardage isn't where you'd like to see it, but Hines is at least a FLEX option in PPR leagues.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines gets ten touches in Week 3.

Hines had five carries for 18 yards and five receptions (on five targets) for 25 yards against the Eagles. The rookie running back has had five-plus receptions in two of his first three NFL games, and he's a deep-league PPR FLEX option for Week 4 against the Texans.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines scores first career touchdown in Colts' win.

Hines received a carry inside the ten-yard line, taking it up the middle for a nice eight-yard score. Overall in the victory against the Redskins, Hines carried four times for seven yards and a touchdown along with one reception (on one target) for -2 yards. It's good to see Hines get a carry deep in the red zone, but he's difficult to trust in standard-sized leagues as a member of Indy's running-back-by-committee.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines catches seven passes in NFL debut.

They went for 33 yards, and Hines also rushed five times for 19 yards. The rookie struggled in preseason action last month with fumbles and inefficiency, but the Colts were probably keeping his role in check until the regular season. If Hines continues to remain heavily involved as an underneath target, it's only a matter of time before he starts breaking some chunk plays, so he might be worth picking up in PPR leagues.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

Nyheim Hines could have a Dexter McCluster/Darren Sproles type of role for the Colts.

Andrew Walker of Colts.com notes that new Colts head coach Frank Reich had Darren Sproles in Philadelphia, while new Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni had Dexter McCluster in Kansas City, and Hines could have a similar role to them to start his career. Reich previously said the team had their eye on Hines "from the very start" and added, "the history of what our offensive staff has done together with some elite speed guys, it was very easy to picture him in our offense." There's certainly a chance Hines becomes a guy that carries the ball more than McCluster and Sproles; but McCluster's career-high in carries was 114, and Sproles has never topped 100 carries in a season. However, if Hines is heavily involved in the passing game—and he's lined up all over the place during the offseason—a lot of his fantasy value could come through the air. So the rookie is a very explosive player that could potentially do a lot of damage this season, but he might not be a big threat to Marlon Mack and others as the team's leading ball-carrier. A lot can change throughout training camp, though, and Indy's backfield is one to keep a close eye on.

Nyheim Hines | Colts RB

The Colts have drafted NC State running back Nyheim Hines with the 104th pick (fourth round) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

This could be an absolute steal for Indianapolis, as we've compared Hines to Tyreek Hill if he were to be a full-time running back. The former track star ran a 4.38 at the Combine as has underrated power in a five-foot-eight frame. He will immediately compete with Marlon Mack for snaps in Frank Reich's offense, and fantasy owners should target him as a late-round flier in fantasy drafts over the summer.
