WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

T.J. Yates | Retired QB

The Texans have hired T.J. Yates as an offensive assistant.

Yates is apparently now retired from the NFL after seven seasons between Houston, Atlanta, Miami, and Buffalo, and he returns to start his career as a coach with a Texans team he had his most success with as a player, seeing some time as a starter. Yates finishes his career with 2,057 passing yards, ten passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 107 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown in 22 games. The former fifth-round pick understands Bill O'Brien's offense and will look to help quarterback Deshaun Watson and other players develop in Houston.

T.J. Yates, Texans fall to 4-12 with 22-13 loss against the Colts.

Yates was 14/24 for 137 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed once for nine yards. The 30-year-old finishes the season by completing 48.5% of his passes for 523 yards and a 4:3 touchdown-interception ratio in four games with the Texans. He will look to earn a backup role in 2018.

T.J. Yates, Texans fall to 4-11 with Christmas Day loss to Pittsburgh.

Yates was 7/16 for 83 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also fumbled three times (one lost) and rushed once for 11 yards. The 30-year-old also left the game to be evaluated for a concussion, but he eventually was cleared and returned. Yates will finish up the season next Sunday against the Colts. He isn't a fantasy option.

T.J. Yates clears concussion protocol.

He's back in the game for the Texans, and it's a good thing with Taylor Heinicke now being sent off to be evaluated for an injury. It's good to see Yates is fine.

T.J. Yates is being evaluated for a concussion.

Yates took a hit on a sack at the end of the first half against the Steelers, and he's not out there to start the second half. Hopefully Yates is OK, but we should get more information soon. Taylor Heinicke, a 2015 undrafted quarterback from Old Dominion, is now under center for the Texans.

Texans offense struggles against the Jaguars.

Jacksonville was all over Houston's offense throughout the Week 15 matchup, not allowing T.J. Yates and the passing offense to get much going. Yates was 12/31 for 128 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and one fumble lost in the loss. The score came on a nice 40-yard throw to DeAndre Hopkins for Houston's only points of the game. Yates should've have as much trouble on Christmas day against the Steelers, but he's not a recommended fantasy option.

T.J. Yates | Retired QB

T.J. Yates plays very well against the 49ers.

After starter Tom Savage suffered a bad hit that sent him to concussion protocol, Yates stepped in and played a good game for the Texans, going 14/26 for 175 yards and two touchdowns (both to DeAndre Hopkins). He also added three carries for 31 yards on the ground. Hopefully Savage feels better and is able to get cleared of his concussion soon, but it's possible Yates remains the starter over the last three games of the season. He's spent a few seasons with the team, has some playoff experience, and might get a chance to stick around as the main backup for Deshaun Watson moving forward.

T.J. Yates | Retired QB

T.J. Yates will be the backup quarterback for the Texans.

After Deshaun Watson went down with a season-ending ACL tear, the team brought both Yates and Matt McGloin into the quarterback group. It'll be Yates, who was previously with the Texans in the NFL and knows O'Brien's offense, behind new starter Tom Savage. Even if Yates ends up making starts this season, he wouldn't be a recommended fantasy option.

Multiple reports: The Bills placed T.J. Yates on IR.

Yates is reportedly still in concussion protocol and could be brought back after eight weeks as one of the team's designated to return players. Rookie Nathan Peterman had won the backup job behind Tyrod Taylor during the preseason anyway, though.

T.J. Yates | Retired QB

T.J. Yates was 9/15 for 83 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Thursday night's exhibition.

The touchdown was a perfectly thrown pass to Brandon Reilly in the corner of the end zone, and the rookie receiver made a spectacular toe-drag catch. Yates was the third quarterback in the rotation for the Bills, but he should make the team if they keep three passers.

The Bills signed quarterback T.J. Yates.

Yates was with the Dolphins at the end of last season, and he is now on his fourth team. The Bills identified this as a "veteran backup" to go with a "starter" (Tyrod Taylor) and "developmental quarterback" (Cardale Jones). There has been speculation the Bills might want a quarterback early in the draft and this should not impact that much—if they love a quarterback, they'll probably want to draft him. Buffalo worked out UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky recently.
