Trey Lance | 49ers QB

Trey Lance is off the injury report for Week 8.

Lance will be back as the No. 2 quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo, and we'd expect Kyle Shanahan might use the rookie in a change-of-pace role in an attempt to spark the offense. As long as the season doesn't completely fall off the rails, though, it'd be a surprise if San Francisco turned to Lance as the starter in 2021.

Trey Lance | 49ers QB

Trey Lance (knee) is out for Week 7.

Jimmy Garoppolo is fortunately off the injury report to start, but Nate Sudfeld will be the No. 2 quarterback for the second game in a row. Hopefully Lance can get healthy in time to return in Week 8.

Trey Lance | 49ers QB

Trey Lance is dealing with a sprained knee.

This injury wasn't known yesterday, as Lance apparently felt it bother him when he went to bed last night and didn't realize he injured the knee during the his first career start against the Cardinals. The Niners are currently on a bye week, so Lance will have some extra time to rest up before Week 7. The hope is that Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) will be ready to play and return as the team's starter after the week off.

Trey Lance | 49ers QB

Trey Lance (finger) will miss about a week.

Lance has a chip in his finger, but it doesn’t sound like a huge deal and comes at a good time with two weeks until the regular season. The rookie should mix in with Jimmy Garoppolo against the Lions in Week 1.

Trey Lance | 49ers QB

Kyle Shanahan says Trey Lance "is going to play for us this season."

While Lance is said to be off to an excellent start to his first NFL training camp, the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo (also having a strong camp) is fully expected to be the Week 1 starters for the Niners. Still, Lance has been working on zone-read plays and designed quarterback runs this summer, and it sounds like that's something Shanahan will use even if Lance is not the starter. At the very least, expect the exciting rookie quarterback to see game action in situational packages this season. Jimmy G has some exciting fantasy upside of his own given the weapons in the San Francisco offense and the fact that he'll be determined (sort of like an Alex Smith 2017 situation with the Chiefs), but Lance seeing time will limit that a bit.

Trey Lance | 49ers QB

The 49ers have selected North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

An extremely intelligent and athletic quarterback that threw for 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions in his lone full season as a starter, Lance brings the dual-threat skillset that can be cultivated to fully unlock Kyle Shanahan’s offense. He only attempted 318 passes throughout his college career, so San Francisco selecting Lance makes it much more likely that they will keep Jimmy Garoppolo and try to make a Super Bowl run in 2021 with the veteran under center. However, if the team ends up feeling like Lance can play as a rookie, he will bring massive upside from a fantasy perspective as a prospect that is almost like a blend of Donovan McNabb and Kyler Murray.
