Trey Sermon | 49ers RB

Trey Sermon has cleared the concussion protocol and will play in Week 3.

Sermon is basically the last man standing for San Francisco’s backfield with Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) doubtful, and the rookie will get a massive opportunity on Sunday night. Jacques Patrick and Trenton Cannon are the other running backs currently on the 53-man roster.

Trey Sermon | 49ers RB

Trey Sermon leaves game with injury.

Sermon finally got a carry late in the fourth quarter and he had a nice eight-yard run, but he took an illegal hit to the head/neck area and was on the ground for a bit. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but he's now getting looked at. Hopefully it's not too serious, but anything with the neck area is obviously concerning.

Trey Sermon | 49ers RB

Trey Sermon a surprise inactive for Week 1.

It sounds like Sermon might be a healthy scratch with no injury of note, so this is a shocker to start the season. Raheem Mostert was already a borderline RB1/RB2 play against Detroit, and he should be fed with JaMycal Hasty and Elijah Mitchell mixing in behind him. Hopefully we get some clarity on the reason Sermon is inactive, as he did nothing to suggest cause for concern in preseason action.

Trey Sermon | 49ers RB

Trey Sermon is dealing with an ankle injury.

It's disappointing that we won't see the rookie running back play in this evening's preseason game against the Chargers, but hopefully he's just being held out as more of a precaution than anything. We'll see if 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gives more info on the extent of Sermon's ankle issue after the game.

Trey Sermon | 49ers RB

The 49ers have selected Ohio State running back Trey Sermon with the No. 88 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

A natural, well-rounded runner with limited holes in his game and landing in Kyle Shanahan's offense behind a top offensive line, Sermon is arguably the best long-term investment of rookie runners not named Travis Etienne or Najee Harris. After producing at Oklahoma, the scorching finish to his college career in 2020 while with the Buckeyes—including a record-breaking, 331-yard performance on the ground in the Big Ten Championship Game—seemed to really boost Sermon’s stock, but we still expect him to be significantly undervalued in both redraft and dynasty leagues in favor of more “flashy” rookies. The Niners currently have a crowded running back depth chart, but they traded up for Sermon and clearly see him as a potential impact guy at running back. The full scouting report for Sermon can be read in the link below.
