Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

The Dolphins officially activated Tua Tagovailoa from injured reserve.

This was fully expected after Tua returned to practice last week. Tagovailoa will start at quarterback for the Dolphins tomorrow in London.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

The Dolphins have designated Tua Tagovailoa (ribs) for return from injured reserve.

Tagovailoa has missed the past three games while on injured reserve, but the expectation has always been that he'll be ready to return when first eligible. Tua will practice this week, and we expect he will be starting for Miami when they face the Jaguars in London this Sunday, but we'll let you know if anything changes. Tagovailoa is potentially entering a critical stretch as he looks to remain the Dolphins' starting quarterback long term.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

The Dolphins are placing Tua Tagovailoa (ribs) on injured reserve, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The hope is that Tua will be healed up and ready to return right when he's eligible, but Jacoby Brissett is set to quarterback the Dolphins for the next three games. This is unfortunate for Tagovailoa, who was looking to take a step forward this season. That'll now be put on hold temporarily, with the playoff-hopeful Dolphins looking to navigate an early-season stretch without their starting quarterback.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (ribs) will not play in Week 3.

[UPDATE: It was further testing that determined the fractured ribs for Tua.] Reports that Tua's X-rays were negative appear to be either incorrect or misleading (perhaps the initial tests for whatever reason did not pick up the issue), but the second-year quarterback is in fact dealing with fractured ribs according to head coach Brian Flores. Consider Tagovailoa week-to-week, with Jacoby Brissett set to start this Sunday against the Raiders.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (rib) is day-to-day.

This is according to head coach Brian Flores, and it's obviously a best-case scenario after Tagovailoa was carted off yesterday considering his history with the hip injury suffered at Alabama. There seems to be a decent possibility that Tua will be able to face the Raiders this weekend, though Miami might want to give him a week to rest against a defense that's been very aggressive.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa's ribs injury not thought to be major.

The X-rays yesterday were negative, and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that further testing "didn't reveal any major issues." Obviously, Tua was in pain yesterday and was limited in motion while getting carted to the locker room, but it sounds like he might have a shot to play in Week 3. Overall, Tagovailoa can probably be considered week-to-week, and we'll see if he can practice this week and how he's listed on the final injury report for Week 3 when it's out on Friday.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

It is officially a rib injury for Tua Tagovailoa.

At least it's not another hip injury for Tua, who is questionable to return against the Bills. Overall, it's probably a good sign that Tua hasn't been immediately ruled out, but it would be a surprise if he returns to this afternoon's game. Before leaving, Tagovailoa was 1/4 for 13 yards.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa is getting carted to the locker room.

Tua took a big hit on a fourth-down pass attempt against the Bills, and he's now getting carted to the back after he was in obvious discomfort. Now we just have to hope this isn't as serious as it might look for a guy that's dealt with a serious hip injury from a couple of years ago. Jacoby Brissett will take over at quarterback for Miami.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is officially active for Week 13.

Tua missed one game with his thumb issue, but he’s back in the lineup for today versus the Bengals. Miami liked how Tagovailoa looked in practice during the week, and he shouldn’t be limited at all. The rookie is not a bad streaming option this week.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is questionable for Week 13.

Miami obviously has a great backup option in Ryan Fitzpatrick, so the expectation is that they won't push the rookie starter. If Tua does end up playing this week, he'd be a quality streaming option in a good matchup against the Bengals.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) was officially limited in today's practice.

The Dolphins are still unsure about Tua's status for Week 13, but it's tough to feel great about it unless he can get up to a full practice by Friday. Miami is fortunate to have veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick ready to go again if Tua can't play this Sunday.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is officially inactive for Week 12.

After smashing his left throwing thumb on a helmet in practice on Wednesday, Tua is not at full strength and will be held out today versus the Jets. The always-entertaining Ryan Fitzpatrick will be back under center this afternoon for the contending Dolphins.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) downgraded to doubtful for Week 12.

Tagovailoa now isn’t expected to play, so Ryan Fitzpatrick is suddenly back on the streaming radar for a start against the Jets. Miami has a very favorable schedule down the stretch, so Tua should at least be held in two-quarterback leagues.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is officially questionable for Week 12.

The Dolphins want to see how Tua is doing on Sunday, so it’s likely going to be a game-time decision. We expect Tua will be fine after jamming his left throwing thumb on a helmet during practice on Wednesday, but his status will be official by 11:30 AM ET on Sunday.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

The Dolphins have named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback, according to ESPN.

With the Dolphins at 3-3 and Ryan Fitzpatrick playing pretty well, this is a bit of a shocker. But Miami apparently feels Tua can take the team to the next level, and the third overall pick will be the starter when the team returns from its Week 7 bye. Tagovailoa's first career start will be a tough matchup against the Rams, but it'll be exciting to see the former Alabama gunslinger on the field.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

Tua Tagovailoa says he's fully healthy.

Ahead of the start of training camp, Tua told USA TODAY, "I'd say I'm ready to go. It's kind of one of those things where you start getting the itch to get back out on the field, to be able to compete." Tagovailoa suffered a bad hip injury over nine months ago while at Alabama, but USA TODAY says he "gave himself a clean bill of health" with training camp around the corner. The COVID-caused delay in the start of camp probably benefitted Tua in that sense, as he'll be out there for Day 1 competing for the starting job. Tagovailoa adds that he wants to do whatever he can to help the team and understands that might be to stand on the sideline and help out Ryan Fitzpatrick to start. The Dolphins have a chance to be exciting on offense this year with either Tagovailoa or Fitzpatrick under center.

Tua Tagovailoa | Dolphins QB

The Dolphins have selected Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tagovailoa entered 2019 as the favorite to go No. 1 overall in the 2020 draft, but he’ll drop to No. 5 overall after the Dolphins sit and wait to get their guy. The smooth lefty throws the ball with great timing and accuracy, and he was one of the most efficient passers in college football history—his main concern as a player is durability, as he dealt with multiple injuries during his time with the Crimson Tide. Tagovailoa lands in a situation that will likely be patient with his hip injury, as Ryan Fitzpatrick played well leading the offense last season. When he hits the field, Tua has a chance to operate an exciting spread attack currently coordinated by Chan Gailey.
