2K’s Return To NFL Video Games Delayed To 2022

The first new NFL football video game from 2K Sports was supposed to arrive sometime this year, but it will now have to wait. The game, which will be the first NFL 2K game since NFL 2K5 was released in 2004 before EA bought an exclusive NFL license, is not among the titles 2K is expected to release during the fiscal year 2022 (ending March 31, 2022).

In a statement to IGN, 2K confirmed the news:

While we are very excited to once again be working with the NFL and NFLPA, our first title under these new partnerships is no longer expected to be released during fiscal year 2022. 2K will have more to share on their plans for our football offerings going forward.

While the new NFL 2K game is said to not be simulation-style, this is tough news for those expecting some type of competitor to the highly controversial Madden series. Fans will be stuck with either Madden or no football game again in 2021.

The good news is that 2K appears to be taking its time with this launch, perhaps indicating this isn’t just some type of money-grab where they want to release the game quick for an increase in revenue.

NFL 2K won’t be back this year, but we can look forward to its release (hopefully next summer) and the release of a new EA Sports college football video game in a couple of years (July 2023 target date).

So, the current ugly, disappointing market for football video games could soon be filled with competition and options—great news for consumers.
