Two of the best times of the year to purchase a new television revolve around football season: At the start of the season, coinciding with Labor Day sales; and at the end of the season for Super Bowl sales. If you’re in the market for a new television, these are among the best options money can buy in 2024.
LG OLED G4
Let’s start with a clear top-two option, the LG OLED G4. LG has been making premium OLED televisions for years, and they’ve really stepped their game up with the G4. If you are unaware, OLED TVs deliver perfect black levels with self-lit pixels that are turned on and off individually—so the blacks and darkness for movies and shows are superb. The G4 now takes the brightness to another level thanks to a new a11 AI Processor and a Micro Lens Array (MLA) display. The design of the television is futuristic, as it can go flush against the wall (you’ll need to buy a separate stand if you aren’t hanging it on the wall).
Sony A95L
Sony and LG have been at the top of the television game for a while now, and the A95L OLED is the best option from the Japanese giant. While not quite as bright as the G4, there’s an argument that the A95L delivers the most “realistic” picture. That said, Sony televisions are priced higher than LG, and the A95L only goes up to 77 inches compared to the LG OLEDs that go to 83 inches (and beyond if you want to drop $20K+). Also, it’s a matter of preference, but many prefer LG’s webOS interface compared to Sony running Android TV.
LG OLED C4
For most consumers, the LG OLED C4 is probably the best option for a new television purchase. The C series has long been the sweet spot for those looking to purchase a stunning TV without breaking the bank. For example, a 65-inch C4 can be had for $1,699.99 during the Labor Day sale, while the same size G4 is $2,899.99.
However, it’s worth noting that the picture quality was always the same between the C series and the G series, with physical design being the only differentiator. But that’s changed, and the G4 is a step above the C4, as the C4 does not have MLA and has an a9 processor compared to the a11.
Overall, the C series is a phenomenal more affordable entry point for those looking to purchase a high-end television.
LG OLED B4
The LG OLED B4 might as well be mentioned, too. It’s another step below from the C4, but you can currently get a 77-inch for $2,000 if you want to go up a size. Maybe you want to purchase a TV for someone that doesn’t really watch many hit movies and shows where they might want the best picture quality possible. Basically, the step down is more than sufficient for more casual television watching like the news and comedies. But if you’re into dramas, the extra price for even more premium quality is likely worth it.
Samsung S90D
If you’re a fan of Samsung, their OLEDs are also a solid option. The S95D is the flagship, but the S90D is a step below and comes in more sizes. While LG and Sony are preferable for sports, if you’re a gamer as well, Samsung specifically calls its 42-inch and 48-inch versions of the S90D a “Gaming TV”. You’ll get excellent brightness for gaming, and it can handle glare well if you’re using the TV during the day or in bright rooms.
Extra tip: They might market well, but it’s recommended to stay away from TCL if you want top quality.
