Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow grabbed the attention of gamers this week when he talked more about his love for Super Smash Bros.

Ness was a somewhat controversial take, but it begs the question: Who are the best Super Smash Bros. characters? Today’s Top Ten Tuesday attempts to figure that out. Keep in mind that individual preferences change things, and a character you have a blast with might not make the list.
10. Lucas
Ness has been getting love recently, but Lucas deserves some props too. Lucas has a great up smash and plus recovery, and he can even freeze opponents with PK Freeze.
9. Samus

Samus from the Metroid series is a heavy character that might not be elite in terms of abilities but can do some serious damage with practice. She has one of the best Final Smash moves in the game, with the Zero Laser that will quickly eliminate the opposition.
8. Mario

Character No. 1 in Super Smash Bros. and Nintendo’s most iconic character must be included in the top ten. Mario is somewhat basic, but that can be a plus for new players that want to use an effective character.
7. Fox
As one of the fastest characters in the game, Fox—the main character from the Star Fox video game series—is one of the top characters to use in Super Smash Bros. if you can tame his speed and ability.
6. Link
Link is another versatile character that can be good for beginners—with the upside to win in a variety of ways for more experienced players. While recovery will be a challenge with Link, you can utilize shield and arrows along with the obvious longsword he possesses.
5. Meta Knight

Meta Knight undoubtedly belongs in the top five of Super Smash Bros. characters. He can basically punish enemies by following them off stage or platform with continued attacks before getting back to safety. Meta Knight’s neutral attack works with rapid speed, and he can hit you with a flurry of combos both on the ground and in the air.
4. Pikachu

A great all-around character, Pikachu has plus offense, defense, speed, and combo ability in Super Smash Bros. Being light, one weakness for the Pokémon is that he can be KO’d quickly; but you’ll ideally be able to dash around the playing area to stay alive and inflict damage with attacks and thunder.
3. Captain Falcon
A fan-favorite thanks in part to some of his catchphrases, Captain Falcon is one of the top attackers in Super Smash Bros.—headlined by his Falcon Punch. And Falcon Kick is a good secondary move for the character that’s been in the series from its start.
2. Ness
It’s wise to agree with Joe Burrow here, as Ness is extremely powerful in his small frame. The EarthBound character can use PK Fire to keep opponents at bay—some might call it “spam” or OP, but there’s no doubt it’s effective.
1. Kirby
Coming in at No. 1, part of what makes Kirby so appealing in Super Smash Bros. is that you get a ton of variety via the little pink hero inhaling and absorbing other characters. The Planet Popstar native’s Copy Ability gives him the neutral move of all other characters, which can be both fun and useful. The Stone move is powerful and can knock opponents out when they are at high damage, and Kirby’s ability to float makes him one of the top survivors in the game.
