More shutdowns have begun to lift in recent days, but let’s hope the world gets back to normal in the coming months, which could mean fewer time in front of screens for many. Either way, gamers have some promising titles to look forward to this year, and today’s Top Ten Tuesday highlights the best video games set to release in 2021.
10. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
The final spot in the Top Ten Tuesday could have also gone to Hitman 3 (already released), Evil Dead: The Game, or GTA V remastered for next gen, but Mass Effect: Legendary Edition gets the nod for containing all three titles in the Mass Effect trilogy all in one purchase. Similar things have been done successfully in the past (like with Halo: The Master Chief Collection), and big Mass Effect fans and newcomers alike should enjoy its full inclusion for next gen consoles.
9. Super Mario 3D World
Available in just a couple of weeks, Super Mario 3D World, along with Bowser’s Fury, will probably be Nintendo’s top offering in 2021. Super Mario 3D World already released for the Wii U back in 2013, but it’s now being brought to the popular Switch console. Because this is basically a port/remaster, Super Mario 3D World is down at No. 9—but, regardless, quality should again be expected from the latest Mario game.
8. Far Cry 6
Inspired by Cuba, the story in Ubisoft’s upcoming Far Cry installment stars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian) as fascist dictator Antón Castillo on the fictional island of Yara. The open world in Far Cry 6 promises to be the most expansive yet, and the chilling trailer displays the mind-blowing graphics we’ll see on the game when it’s released.
7. Gran Turismo 7
Like with Forza on the Xbox Series X, PlayStation exclusive Gran Turismo 7 will get the most out of the DualSense controller, likely giving a different feeling depending on the type of car you’re driving. The Gran Turismo series prides itself on creating a realistic driving simulation, and that should be as evident as ever on the PlayStation 5.
6. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
The newest LEGO video game will allow you to play as a whopping 300 characters in a galaxy far, far away. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will focus on the nine primary Star Wars movies (the three Skywalker trilogies), allowing you to play through the saga in video game form—undoubtedly with more fun and humor sprinkled throughout in the LEGO setting.
5. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
[UPDATE: After this was published today, it was announced that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been pushed to 2022.] The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will take place prior to the events of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Not a ton of information on the game is available yet, but Gollum should be a great character to dive more into in an open-world game. If LOTR: Gollumhas success, expect more like this (a Game of Thrones video game, anyone?) to be released.
4.Battlefield
The latest Battlefield game (likely called “Battlefield 6”) will be out for next holiday season, and it should be one of the most popular pickups in November and December. Battlefield V was basically a disaster, so EA is looking to redeem itself this time around, which will hopefully lead to a good product for consumers.
3. Gotham Knights
There was some relative disappointment when Gotham Knights was revealed to be a game that doesn’t focus on Batman himself as the protagonist, but it could be a fresh change up to play in a new world with a new cast of characters. Red Hood, Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing are all more than capable fighters that should be fun to utilize in Gotham Knights.
2. God of War: Ragnarok
The reviews for the 2018 God of War game on PlayStation 4 couldn’t have gotten much higher praise from critics, and the follow-up might be even better on the PlayStation 5. God of War: Ragnarok should be a hallmark for the PS5’s exclusive offerings, and the story should be another powerful one.
1. Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite was supposed to be the big launch title for the Xbox Series X, but it was pushed back to 2021 due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. While disappointing for Microsoft, Xbox and gamers, on the plus side, the Halo team can take their time and ensure they get things right for a key title on the next gen console. Also, the hype may continue building with fans forced to wait for the latest chapter featuring Master Chief.
