The second film in the current Star Wars trilogy has not even been released yet, but there will already be another trilogy—though separate to the Skywalker saga. Lucasfilm officially announced today that a brand-new trilogy will be created by Rian Johnson, director of December’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The announcement was revealed on StarWars.com with a statement which, in part, reads:
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
The Last Jedi will be released in theaters on December 15, and Star Wars: Episode IX is set to be released on December 19, 2019. It’s unclear when another Star Wars trilogy will be released, but it certainly feels like it won’t be a very long wait.
Could this be a bit of overkill from Disney, going with this many Star Wars films? Considering the success of non-trilogy films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the likely success of this May’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney should do be just fine and make a ton of money with a lot of fanfare with a few more films.
Comically, “no porgs were available for comment” in the announcement, so we won’t get any answers from them in regards to market saturation.
Interesting… not sure what it’ll be about if it’s not in the Skywalker story
Love this if it’s not too far unrelated
