While many people are hoping for a “Space Jam 2”, Celtics superstar Kyrie Irving has his own original basketball movie coming out this summer. “Uncle Drew” stars Irving as the main character, which started in a Pepsi ad back in 2012 and became wildly popular thanks to some convincing acting from the former Duke Blue Devil.

The original “Chapter 1” ad has over 50 million views on YouTube, and six years later, the character is being made into a movie. Irving going on to become one of the league’s best players and an NBA champion that made a clutch shot to help push Cleveland over the top for the city’s first title in over 50 years is certainly a driving force that’s allowing Lionsgate to create this film, which also features Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Lisa Leslie, Nate Robinson, Nick Kroll and others. Here’s the film’s trailer:
If the NBA Finals go to seven games, they would end on June 17. And Irving and the film would benefit if he’s still playing and wins a title with his second team a couple weeks ahead of the film, but either way it looks like a good amount of people will see the film given the popularity of the character. Uncle Drew having success at the box office could lead to a sequel, unlike Michael Jordan’s classic Space Jam.
Uncle Drew hits theaters on June 29.
