Top Ten Tuesday: Best Movie Trailers Of All-Time

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday continues the movie theme from the last few weeks, as today we’re going over the best movie trailers of all-time. There are plenty of film trailers that didn’t make the cut, but these are among the most exceptional. [NOTE: Trailers may include violence or frightening scenes.]

10. The Shining

A few horrifying movie trailers could’ve made the top ten, but The Shining is the simplest of them all. A river of blood rushing from an elevator is pretty disturbing, and it set the tone of what people could expect when going to see the movie in theaters.

9. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Phantom Menace trailer also received a lot of hype at the end of last century, but many people were intrigued by what Disney would do with the Star Wars franchise. The trailer for The Force Awakens did not disappoint, giving the feeling that Disney didn’t yet take the heart out of the franchise—and it didn’t give away too much about the plot.

8. No Country for Old Men

No Country for Old Men was a unique neo-Western thriller that helped the genre, starting with an action-packed trailer to build hype for the eventual Best Picture winner. Pulp Fiction had a similar trailer that could’ve also been in the top ten.

7. The Social Network

While it might not be as accurate as some people would have liked, The Social Network was very popular leading up to its 2010 release, with an interesting trailer. “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies” is one of the greatest taglines of any movie in history.

6. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

A lot of people do not like Batman v. Superman, but this article is solely about the trailers. Any of the trailers for the Man of Steel sequel could’ve been in the top ten (and Man of Steel also could have been included), but the Comic-Con one is arguably the best—and it didn’t give away too much about the appearance of Doomsday.

5. Inception

It wasn’t entirely clear what Inception was about based on its trailer, but that’s part of what made it so good. A movie led by Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio was enough to garner a ton of anticipation after this trailer dropped.

4. Alien

The Alien trailer is a slow build ending with quick, intense action to whet one’s appetite. The tagline, “In space, no one can hear you scream” is also among the best ever.

3. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, so the standards were extremely high for final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The trailers established Bane as a huge force of evil in the battle for Gotham City.

2. Suicide Squad

Say what you will about the recent DC films, but there’s no question their trailers were flat-out awesome. Suicide Squad did Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” justice (which is no easy task), using it to perfection; it’s just too bad the movie didn’t quite live up to one of the greatest trailers of all-time.

1. The Dark Knight

The hype started in the final scene of Batman Begins, when Officer Gordon handed Batman a Joker card. From there, The Dark Knight became a phenomenon, and the appearance of Heath Ledger’s Joker in the first trailer was a big surprise to everyone at the time.
