Last week, we went over the top ten scary movies to stream in October, and today’s Top Ten Tuesday goes over the top scary shows—new and otherwise—to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and premium networks. Netflix leads the way with two of its new series for this month, but there are selections for whichever subscription you have.
10. Lore (Amazon Prime)
This list has a few anthology series, and Amazon has a horror anthology series of its own: Lore. The first season was released last October, and Season 2 launches this October (October 19), so it’s a great series to watch during Halloween season. The Walking Dead, Castle Rock, Twin Peaks, and The X-Files all could have made the cut as eerie shows.
9. Black Mirror (Netflix)
Black Mirror is Netflix’s big hit anthology series, and part of what makes it so scary is that it relates to real-life situations with technology and other pitfalls of life today. There hasn’t been a straight-up Halloween episode yet, but “Playtest” is the perfect episode to watch in October.
8. American Horror Story (FX/Netflix)
FX has delivered a ton of American Horror Story content since its premiere in October 2011, and it’s getting a ninth and tenth season in 2019 and 2020. While viewership has dropped, AHS is still a popular series. It even led to FX creating the American Crime Story series.
7. Bates Motel (Netflix)
Psycho is one of the greatest horror films of all-time, and Bates Motel is a television series prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic movie. The A&E series, which concluded last year, is available to watch on Netflix.
6. The Twilight Zone (Hulu/Amazon Prime/Netflix)
One of the original anthology series was The Twilight Zone, so it’s only right that it makes the list. It’s a good fit for October, and there are plenty of episodes to choose from if you want to bounce around.
5. True Blood (HBO/Amazon Prime)
An HBO series must make the top ten, and True Blood has vampires, so it’s an easy fit. The show is based on Charlaine Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries.
4. Stranger Things (Netflix)
Stranger Things has been one of Netflix’s biggest hits since its original release in 2016. No new season is releasing this October, but it’s a good month to start if you’ve been pondering it.
3. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)
Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starring Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men makes the top three as a promising series. It’s due out October 26th on the streaming giant, and it has the look of a show that’ll set a perfect mood given the time of year.
2. Penny Dreadful (Showtime/Netflix)
Penny Dreadful aired just three seasons, but the Showtime series was a highly-acclaimed show that took classic characters and perfectly transitioned the stories and themes to television. The gothic-horror hit is one of the best things to watch in October.
1. The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)
Set to release in three days (Friday, October 12), The Haunting of Hill House has the look of a must-watch for fans of horror and spooky shows and movies. The trailer is likely to sell most people on the fence about the series.
