San Francisco gave McKinnon top-five running back money, so they obviously thought he was a perfect fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and Turner echoed that by saying he believes the former Vikings’ skill set is perfect for the offensive system. Turner said McKinnon is “a complete running back… He’s here for a reason. We feel that he’s going to be productive and help take us to the next level. We’re expecting great things out of him.” He also added that McKinnon’s speed really stands out, as he can do everything you want from a running back, with “one thing that is different, he is faster.” All indications are McKinnon is going to have an opportunity to be the clear number one running back for the 49ers, and with their offense potentially on the rise, he clearly offers RB1 upside in 2018.

Derek Carr says he can “see why Aaron (Rodgers) loved throwing [Jordy Nelson] the ball.”
Carr talked about the leadership the former Packer brings to the receiving room, setting the example for the other guys. Carr says Nelson is “very detailed” and “wants to do everything exactly how you want it done.” Basically, Nelson can be trusted by the quarterback to be at the right spot on his routes, which is exactly what a quarterback wants in a league with such a small margin for error. Carr added that Jordy “knows if you’re comfortable, you’ll throw it to them.” It sounds like Nelson has quickly gained the trust of his new quarterback, and he should be a big part of the offense in 2018 despite head coach Jon Gruden calling Amari Cooper being the focal point of the passing game. Remember, Nelson was leading the league in touchdown receptions until Rodgers’ collarbone injury last year.

Chris Carson gained about ten pounds from last year.
NFL Network’s James Palmer says the second-year running back is up to 227 pounds, and he looks in shape, so he’s committed to putting on good muscle this offseason. As long as he didn’t lose explosiveness with the added weight, the extra bulk should help him moving forward. Carson says he’s back to 100% from his leg fracture suffered early October last year, which is a great sign. The Seahawks drafted former San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny in the first round, so they’re probably going to use him a lot on offense. However, Carson played well for Seattle until he went down last season, and he could have a solid role in the backfield.

Kerryon Johnson might return kicks this season.
The Lions did kick return drills during today’s minicamp training session, and the second-round rookie running back was among those in the group. Johnson returned kicks during his first two seasons at Auburn, so he has experience and comfort with it. Johnson’s versatility should only help him get on the field during his rookie season.

The Browns and running back Duke Johnson have agreed to terms on a long-term extension, according to NFL Network.
According to Ian Rapoport, it’s a three-year extension worth $15.6 million, including a $5 million signing bonus. It’s starter’s money for Johnson (top ten in annual salary at the position), who figures to remain a big part of the offense as the main receiving option out of the backfield. He could also contribute from the slot like he did in 2017, but that’s less likely with Jarvis Landry in the fold. Although Carlos Hyde should be a factor in 2018, Cleveland’s backfield future will likely be Nick Chubb as the early-down pounder with Johnson handling the receiving work. Dynasty owners should be happy with this news, as the Browns probably didn’t sign Johnson for significant money to not utilize him often.

The Browns and running back Duke Johnson are close to a contract extension, according to NFL Network.
Johnson is entering the final year of his rookie deal and coming off a season where he caught 74 passes for 693 yards and three scores. He also rushed 82 times for 348 yards and four touchdowns in 2017, but the 24-year-old’s main value comes as a receiver. Despite the team adding Carlos Hyde and Nick Chubb through free agency and the draft, Johnson should have a similar role this season on what will almost certainly be an improved offense, making him a solid FLEX in PPR leagues.

Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for PEDs, according to ESPN.
Stunning news always comes up during the NFL offseason, and this certainly qualifies as that. Edelman’s four-game ban is under appeal, but right now he has to be expected to miss Weeks 1-4 of the 2018 season. Edelman suffered a torn ACL last preseason, so perhaps he felt compelled to get an edge in his recovery; but we’ll see what the two-time Super Bowl champion says when he inevitably releases a statement or talks about it. With Danny Amendola now with the Dolphins, the Patriots are going to need someone to step up in the slot for the first four games of the season if Edelman’s suspension is upheld. Fortunately for New England, they do have a crowded receiving group with several guys that could contribute. Right now, former Eagles and Bills receiver Jordan Matthews, who played mostly in the slot during his first four NFL seasons, might be the favorite to get a lot of snaps inside for the Patriots. But the most likely scenario might be the offense rotating guys in. This preseason should give some clarity on the situation.
