Join now >Tight end Richard Rodgers is signing a one-year deal with the Eagles, according to Ian Rapoport.
Free agent signings are starting to pick back up again, as Rodgers is the second tight end to sign today (Troy Niklas signed with New England), and quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Matt Cassel also signed with teams. Rodgers spent his first four seasons in Green Bay and looked like he might emerge as one of the league’s best after he caught 58 passes for 510 yards and eight touchdowns during his second season, but his role decreased over the last two seasons. He’ll now join an Eagles tight end group that lost Trey Burton in free agency and released veteran Brent Celek. Philadelphia uses a ton of two- and three-tight end sets, so Rodgers should get a good amount of playing time. Zach Ertz is clearly the fantasy tight end to own for the Eagles, though.

Rob Gronkowski remains in concussion protocol.
Gronkowski was hoping to get cleared today, but it didn’t happen yet and he remained limited in practice. There is still plenty of time for Gronkowski to get cleared before Sunday, and we fully anticipate it happening. Perhaps the Patriots and their fans should be slightly worried, but all indications are that Gronk is feeling fine and will be OK. There’s always the possibility of New England wanting to place the slight hope into the Eagles that the All-Pro won’t be on the field for Super Bowl LII only for it to be torn down if Gronk is out there—but Philadelphia is certainly gameplanning for Gronk to play. Check back in tomorrow for Gronkowski’s practice status.

Matt Cassel is signing with the Lions, according to Mike Garafolo.
Cassel will likely slide in as Matthew Stafford’s backup under new head coach Matt Patricia, though Jake Rudock should also remain in the quarterback room. This signing isn’t a surprise, as Cassel, Patricia, and GM Bob Quinn were all in New England at one point. The veteran signal-caller turns 36 in May.

Tyler Eifert has been cleared to play in 2018, according to Adam Schefter.
Eifert had season-ending back surgery last season, which was his second back surgery within a year, but according to Schefter, Dr. Robert Watkins cleared the tight end to participate in this spring’s OTAs. Eifert is scheduled to become a free agent at the start of the new league year on March 14, and teams will be intrigued by his touchdown- and big-play ability when he’s on the field. However, given his injury history, he’ll likely have to settle for a short-term deal, perhaps with play-time incentives and not much guaranteed money.

The Dolphins are releasing quarterback Brandon Doughty, according to Armando Salguero.
Doughty was a seventh-round selection of the Dolphins in 2016, and he was on the team’s practice squad the last two years. He hopefully won’t have too much trouble finding a new team. Meanwhile, the Dolphins could be in the market for another quarterback in this year’s draft. It’s also possible the Dolphins bring Doughty back at a later time.

Some Broncos players say they want Kirk Cousins.
Both Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller and running back C.J. Anderson say they want to sign the soon-to-be-former Redskins quarterback when he hits free agency. Miller said Cousins could take the team “over the edge,” and Anderson said they “need to make it happen.” Players from other teams typically hang around during Super Bowl week, so we’ll see if we hear anything from players on other teams. However, John Elway will be the one making decisions for the Broncos, and the team’s interest will come down to how much he likes Cousins as a quarterback compared to some of the other quarterbacks potentially available this offseason, both in the draft and free agency.

The Patriots are signing tight end Troy Niklas, according to Ian Rapoport.
It’s a one-year deal according to Rapoport. Niklas spent the first four seasons of his career with the Cardinals after he was selected with the 52nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The big tight end dealt with injuries throughout his career thus far, but he had only 11 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown in 15 games last season. However, Niklas is clearly a talented player, and the Patriots might be the perfect spot for him. All-Pro Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen are both in the mix, but Allen contributed more as a blocker in 2017, so don’t be surprised if Niklas is utilized in multiple tight end sets near the red zone. Tom Brady throwing passes will be a major plus.
