Join now >John Brown remains limited in training camp with a quad injury.
Head coach Bruce Arians said of Brown, who has missed most of training camp with this quad injury, “It’s a concern. He’s not available. You’re only good when you’re available.” Arians is unhappy with all of his receivers outside of Larry Fitzgerald and Jaron Brown, but John Brown isn’t 100% and hasn’t been able to practice fully. The soft tissue injuries are a big concern for Brown, who has dealt with them throughout his career. Previously locked into the number two receiver role, Brown is going to need to get healthy to be worth a mid-late round fantasy pick. Jaron Brown might have some sleeper appeal if John Brown doesn’t get healthy soon.

Josh Johnson starts first preseason game for the Giants.
Johnson drew the start over Geno Smith with Eli Manning not playing, and he went 5/10 for 31 yards against the Steelers. It’s probably going to be a battle between Johnson and Smith for the backup job (and a roster spot) behind Eli Manning. Smith threw an interception, but was able to do more than Johnson besides that. Still, look for Johnson to remain the number two heading into the second preseason game in two Mondays against Cleveland.

Ezekiel Elliott has officially appealed his suspension, according to Adam Schefter.
The league now has ten days to schedule a hearing for the appeal. This now could drag into the regular season (in which case Elliott would be able to play until it is settled), though there will ideally be a solution before then. Elliott and the NFLPA might also take the NFL to court, as it’s clear Elliott feels he did nothing wrong and is reportedly gearing up for a long battle. Elliott’s father was also vocal on Twitter, tweeting “My son’s legal team is ready team is ready to fight!” Meanwhile, the NFL seems to be strongly on the other side, as they already threatened Elliott with a potential banishment for another violation. It’s possible Elliott ends up not suspended at all this season if this drags through the court system and he gets a stay to play until the saga is over.

Geno Smith comes in behind Josh Johnson in Giants preseason game.
With Eli Manning not playing in the game, Johnson got the start over Geno. When Smith entered the game, he went 10/16 for 114 yards and an interception. Other than the interception, Smith played well; but he’ll probably need to have a great performance to take hold of the backup job behind Manning.

Colts TE Erik Swoope had a knee scope.
Head coach Chuck Pagano said Swoop is week-to-week. This puts him in jeopardy for the season opener on September 10. Jack Doyle would get an upgrade if Swoope were to miss any weeks during the regular season.

Eli Rogers plays in preseason opener for the Steelers.
Rogers had one reception for two yards and was among the only starting skill position players to play in the game. Rogers is expected to remain in the slot as the starter there, but he probably doesn’t have much breakout value as long as Martavis Bryant stays out of trouble and on the field for the Steelers.

Curtis Samuel participated in individual drills today at practice.
The second-round pick out of Ohio State hasn’t practiced for the Panthers since the first day of training camp. Samuel, who was dealing with a strained hamstring, took a few reps in individual drills then rehabbed the rest of practice. Head coach Ron Rivera said, “he’s getting a little bit more work. Hopefully we can increase that tomorrow and Thursday.” It sounds like Samuel is close to being a full participant, but he probably won’t be playing in the team’s second preseason game this Saturday. The rookie is obviously behind after missing so much time, so he’s not really someone you should be drafting on your fantasy team as of now.
